I have two cats that are a little over a year old. a while ago one of cats have started peeing and pooing right outside the litter box. (they are indoor cats).
my question is, can you train a cat to go in the litter box even though they are over a year old? And if you can. How do you train them. I got my cats after they had been trained by another lady.

Some cats won't use the same box as another cat so you may hve to try using 2 boxes. [ catdogbird1127's advice column | Ask catdogbird1127 A Question ]

First reason, is that the litter box may be too dirty. A cat doesn't want to have to dig through it's old shit in order to bury it's new shit, so he won't use the litter box. My advice is to clean out all of the clumps in the box every day and get two litter boxes so that the cats don't have to share.
Second reason is that the cat may be too large for the litter box. It sounds like he might be trying to poo in the box, but he's too big, therefore his bum hangs over while he squats in the box. Get a larger litter box if you think this may be the problem.
Third reason is that there may be some sort of medical problem, and if that's the case, then you may want to get him to the vet to get him checked out.
It sounds like it's mostly likely a case of a small litter box with a big cat. Get a bigger box, and keep it cleaned out, and hopefully your problem will go away. If not, then ask a veterinarian what they think. [ selectopaque's advice column | Ask selectopaque A Question ]

There's obviously something that's causing him to do this. I would say that maybe the litter box is too full or he/she doesn't like sharing it with the other cat. In that case I would have a seperate litter box for the cat. Another thing that bothers some cats is that they don't like the scented litter (if that's what you have.) I used to have a cat that hated the scented litter and would then pee/poo in the bathroom! There are many possibilities to why your cat is doing this. I would look into every one of them, because it's not very nice having a cat poo outside the box! Good luck!
ncblondie answered Saturday January 28 2006, 1:41 am: First, is there a reason you can find why they're not using the litter box? Does it need to be cleaned? Some cats are picky about how often their box is cleaned. Have you recently changed to a different cat litter? Cats have sensitive noses and will sometimes refuse to use certain litters because they don't like the way they smell. Is the litter box near their food? Most cats don't like to do their business near where they eat. Is the cat a male and, if so, has it been fixed? Male cats (and a few females as well) will sometimes mark their territory. It's less common if they're fixed. Is the box accessible but still private? Some cats prefer privacy when they go. Moving the box where it's less visible may help.
It should be possible to retrain your cat to use the litter box. What I always did was restrict the cat to a certain area (the bathroom worked well for me) and put the litter box in the room with it. When they go where they're not supposed to, say "No!" and then take them to the litter box. When the cat uses the litter box, praise it.
If the cat continues to have problems using the litter box, you may want to consider a trip to the vet. There may be a medical reason (for example, a bladder infection) why the cat is not using the litter box. [ ncblondie's advice column | Ask ncblondie A Question ]
luckybutt32 answered Saturday January 28 2006, 1:25 am: well for starters cats are very territorial animals some will not share a litter box with another cat. if the litterbox is dirty cats dont like using it i had cats that would go right outside the box also. it may be that they dont like the litter you are using . try switching brands or whatever. also yes you can train an older cat to go in the box. just put him in the box after meals and sleep and take his paw and make him scratch around with it in a while they will begin to do it when they pick up thier own scent. do it alot like everyday till the cat gets the hint. kittens learn from watching thier mama scratch in the box so if you help they will see [ luckybutt32's advice column | Ask luckybutt32 A Question ]
