Why do some people feel the need to stereotype? I find it very small minded, especially when people say:
*"emos" are suicidal
*"preps" are mean
*guys are horndogs
*girls are bitches when they get their periods
*teenagers are full of raging hormones and go through tons of mood swings
etc.

It's just normal, in your mind you just kind of split everything up into different groups. I know that it isn't always healthy, but it really can't be controlled. When you are put into a school of thousands of kids that act/walk/dress/ or talk differently, you can't help but to notice it and stereotype.

I agree it's wrong, but that's how people are and always have been. The only thing you could do is stick up for yourself and what you believe in. And if you see it happening to someone else, step in, don't stand and watch someone get put down.
not_your_star34 answered Saturday January 28 2006, 11:51 am: It's a school thing. The reason for it? It depends on the person.
For instance, some people like the whole "punk" thing, so they label themselves that and try to look and act the part (Some don't even know about the original "punk" bands, like the Sex Pistols).
They want to fit a certain ideal to become friends with certain people or to just look cool.
Some people don't get to know a person, so they just label them. Like, someone who's "punk" can think someone is "preppy," therefore, they're mean (in that person's eyes, anyway). I've seen a lot of people do this, and it's pretty stupid.
You're right: labels are stupid. I know people who like labels, and I try to convince people that they're pointless. Why? People aren't cans. There isn't one person on this earth who is a complete "prep" or "punk." People have so many different personalities.
Teza answered Friday January 27 2006, 6:08 pm: I don't think that anyone knows the correct answer to this question because everyone has their reasons for sterotyping. They think that people who dress a certain way have to act that way. I get sterotyped all the time. Just today a girl said to me, "Teza wouldn't do drugs or drink because she is a prep." I got offended not because of the drug and drinking part, but because the last thing. Just because I dress a certain way does not mean I am stuck up or bitchy because I can be but that's not how I am. People come to conclusions before they even know anything. It gets really annoying and sometimes the sterotypes can be true, but then I wouldn't call them sterotypes. I personally hate labels, but then again people will never stop doing it. Not all "emo" people are sad, depressed or whatever .. but it's just a style. Preps can be mean. I hate those types of girls because they think that they are the best and that they can't be freinds with anyone out of their group.. they aren't mean because they are preps, but they're mean because they're stupid and selfish. Not all guys are horn dogs, but some guys defenetlly are. Girls are not bitches when they are on their period, they just choose to be that way. Teenagers are full of ragins hormoneys and go through tons of mood swings.. that's defenetlly true. It's just how some people are. I wish there weren't any sterotypes or labels but I guess it will never be that way. [ Teza's advice column | Ask Teza A Question ]
HEYxBEAUTIFUL answered Friday January 27 2006, 5:55 pm: People stereotype people because of how they dress. Maybe they don't liek preps so they think of them as snobs because they knew a prep that was a snob so they think that all preps are snobs. I personally think it is stupid. Each individual is different and people shouldn't judge them by their sex, style, hair, ethnic background, etc. ♥ [ HEYxBEAUTIFUL's advice column | Ask HEYxBEAUTIFUL A Question ]

Just using the ones you mentioned...
Guys are horn-dogs. All I have met are anyway.
Some girls but not all are real bitches when they are having their periods.
And teens are full of raging hormones. No doubt about that.
The others and those like them are not true. I don't know why people do that. I guess they always have. Used to be if you had long hair and listened to rock music..oh man you were evil!
