I am a Christian and I believe in God... I love God. It's just that more and more I feel I'm drifting away from my Lord. Sometimes I'll pray and promise God I will pray more and talk to him more, but I either forget to and rarely but sometimes I will say in my head, "I need to pray," but then I don't(purposely).
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get closer to God, or ways to strengthen my relationship with the Lord? I don't want to be this way... but when it comes to praying...I just don't. Any ideas? Express your feelings! Thank you so much!

I am a Christian too and struggle with the same problem. I used to be on my church worhsip team but since I started my new job I can't go because I usually work nights.
If you want to feel closer to the lord, my suggestion would be to take the Alpha course. Does your church offer this course? It's very popular. I took this course 3 times at my church. It's a great way to interact with other Christians and you will learn so much about the bible and what God wants for us.
Another way you can strengthen your relationship with the Lord is to try to live your life the way you know the Lord would want you to. Watch how you treat your family, friends and coworkers. Would God be happy with your relationship with these people? Do you try to help others who are in need? Do you donate money to charities? These are all things that God will be watching. Remember no one is perfect, and God knows this better than any one.
Another idea I have is that if you are bored or feel you are drifting away from the Lord, buy a new bible. Get one that talks about what teens are going through. I just got a new bible for Xmas, well actually it's a New Testament Bible but it's in the form of a magazine, it's called BECOMMING, by NCV (new century version). It makes it more enjoyable for me to read unlike the old fashioned bible that sometimes can get downright boring. You can probably find this in your local book store.

mylordwon answered Tuesday January 17 2006, 11:18 pm: Let me encourage you with this. The simple fact that this is bothering you tells me your heart must be right on. Because this is a desire of your heart and God's will for His children, I have no doubt you will be granted this. Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give the desires of your heart."
Now, about prayer.....The bible says in First Thes. 5:17 to pray without ceasing. Praying isn't always "get on your knees in a quiet room" or that verse wouldn't be in the bible. To pray without ceasing means to take the Lord with you wherever you go all day and all night. Meditate on His Word (means to think about what His word says) and ask Him what it means. Tell Him about your friend who is hurting. Ask Him to provide what you need. These things can be done while you're in the shower, washing dishes, or whatever. It can be in your mind, on your lips, or in a journal. But even more importantly, listen. God doesn't shout; He whispers. So quiet your spirit and and let Him speak to you. Prayer is conversation not just your words.
That's not to say you don't set aside time to get on your knees in a quiet place and spend time with Him. Quiet time is necessary. What I do is I read from the Old Testament before I go to sleep at night and the New Testament before I get up in the morning. I read whether I want to or not. Then as I fall asleep at night or go about my day, I digest what I've read which helps me focus on Him.
Making promises to God is a good way to set yourself up for failure as you well know. Satan will do everything to get you in a place of discouragement. So instead of making promises, tell the Lord what's on your mind, ask Him for help, and then trust Him. [ mylordwon's advice column | Ask mylordwon A Question ]
crazygoober2006 answered Tuesday January 17 2006, 10:21 pm: I know how you are feeling. You shouldn't make promises to God though because God knows you aren't perfect. You know you aren't perfect, and you are going to fail. God is not only your father, but he is also your friend. Would you consider someone you hardly ever talk to your friend, or would they consider you a friend? You can't be a friend to someone that you don't talk to. I mean, it's basically impossible. God wants us to talk to him. You don't have to be like "Dear Lord, thank you for this, this and this, forgive me...blah blah blah." Not everyone is comfortable with that. If setting time aside to talk to him is a problem...make it an ongoing process. Don't stop the conversation. Start the day with it, keep it going off and on through out the day when you think of something...and end it when you fall asleep. Keep your prayer an ongoing conversation with God. You know he's listening to you. Read the bible...psalms, proverbs, Romans...anything...sometimes it's hard to find the will to do that...but pray that he'll work on your heart and then you'll want to know more. That's how you grow. Maybe you can find a calender or something with a verse a day, and apply it. Good luck and I hope this helps. [ crazygoober2006's advice column | Ask crazygoober2006 A Question ]
