Audition

Question Posted Tuesday December 27 2005, 12:46 pm

Oh. My. Fucking. God. I'm going to an audition for the musical "Phantom" by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit (NOT the opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber!) and so to get into the whole Phantom the Opera theme, I chose the song "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from the Andrew Lloyd Webber version. I got it down, but the thing is, I don't know what to do about my body. What should I do with it? I know I can't just stand there. Movement just doesn't come naturally for me.

Thanks

Cheyenne

Additional info, added Tuesday December 27 2005, 12:57 pm:
No, it's not acting that's the problem. I can sing and act and "become" the character, but I have no sense of movement. If I were like doing an audio recording everything would be just fine. I see photos and videos of Sarah Brightman and Emma Ross and Patti LuPone and Julie Andrews swaying their bodies while they sing and waving their hands everywhere. .

If you're not comfortable moving around, don't worry too much about it. I've seen more otherwise great auditions ruined by the auditioner moving just for the sake of moving. It looks silly. It's so "didn't make it past round one of American Idol." Weak hand gestures tells the director you don't know how to make strong choices, dancing too much tells the director you're a show off, and swaying can quickly look like an unconscious action and makes you look like a puppet so lost in their focus that they have lost touch with the reality of the moment.

And actually: you CAN just stand there. Keep your hands at your sides (not pinned down, just hanging loosely) and get to singin'. (If you've ever watched a professional choral group, this is a common stance and is totally acceptable at an audition.) Looking at ease scores you way more points than having some goofy physical routine worked out ever will. Especially if that "routine" is only for one or two lines of the song. That makes you look akward since the rest of the song uses no movements. It highlights your uneasiness.

The director will worry about what to do with your body while you're performing a song during the show, so don't worry that you're not showing him/her enough of what you can do. Just sing your heart out and relax your body. Anything you have to "put on" will look distractingly fake.

Be yourself, but really overly passionate. In acting, you have to exaggerate your features and your emotions to get the audience connected.
So, act really passionate, like how the actress that plays Christine sings that song in the movie. If you don't feel comfortable with that, then just stand there. If you have a good enough voice, they won't care what movement you have because you'll have it down by the time the show opens.
Good luck!!
Kylie

look up like you are actually wishing (make it really dramatic), take a few steps move away then back to the center...you have to show you are comfortable using the whole stage, be somewhat "hands-y" and put them up like properly at your waist (like holding each other) then the occasional hand on heart thing. i suggest wearing sme kind of necklace... it'll guide you on where to put your hands and such. <3

ps. ENUNCIATE! (like pronouce what's supposed to be pronounced!) my voice teacher was concerned about this when i sang it.. good luck at the audition too!

Being on stage requires presence. You don't have to have the best voice, but if you have a stage presence that can get you parts. Try watching, renting, or stealing online the Phantom of the Opera. Watch who they move and the way they use their bodies. Watch any muscial.

These people actually become the characters and take on the feelings of the situation. Theatre isn't just about singing. You need to be able to act as well. Practice that before trying out. It is much harder than it looks.
