Career Choice At the begining of the year my biology honors teacher had us fill out a form about us. It asked what we wanted to be careerwise. I put that I wanted to be a journalist. The other day he read off what everyone wanted to be. The other kids wanted to be surgeons, and marine biologists..all really important things. When he got to my name he said "Journalist!....Good luck with that. She'll never get a job"
I was so embarassed! Everyone else had really important careers picked out and mine was so stupid. I'm not sure if I want to be a journalist anymore but now I have no idea what I want to do. I have to look at colleges next year and I have no clue what I want to major in. Can anyone help me?

I really hate when people do that. Obviously you can be a journalist if you really want to be... there are journalists out there, aren't there? Just because you're not getting into a science based career, it doesn't mean it's not important! And this is coming from an engineering student. I have friends studying Classical History and Political Science... but they're happy with what they're learning, and that's what is important. ]
Some teachers are just hell bent on making everyone's lives miserable. He was just being mean cause the answer you gave wasn't what he wanted to hear. Major in what is important to YOU and not someone else! There are tons of opportunities in journalism- don't expect to be a writer for the New York Times the day you graduate college- but don't give it up.
Some great journalism schools are University of Missoui and Syracuse University. Good luck. ]
His comment might have been directed at the job market for journalists, not at your talent or qualifications. If being a journalist is what interests you, then you definitely need to pursue that further. Don't let off-hand remarks determine your future.

I would disregard what your teacher said -- the teacher was not only rude, but also incorrect, as there are many jobs out there for journalists. A lot of the jobs are not the best paying in the world, but they exist -- otherwise we would have no newspapers, radio, CNN etc.
I also would not worry overmuch about what you will major in at college. Most colleges, except for a few specialized art or engineering schools, have a wide variety of majors. Some have hundreds of majors. And most people change their major at least once -- I was intially English, then switched to History with a Politics minor, then dropped the minor.
As for good majors for journalism, here are suggestions: history, political science, English, communications, or journalism. Any major that requires you to write a lot, reasearch, and think independently would be good. ]
dont let anyone put you down like your teacher did..if you really want to become a journalist then you should..if your not sure about what you want to become go to your guidence couselor or someone older with expeirience. ]
ok- that was downright rude of your teacher. You can be a journalist and its an important job. How else would we have know what was going on during Hurricane Katrina, or in Iraq or any other major event in history? I'm a journalist. I make money at it and its a job I love. I had so many people tell me through the years not to do it or good luck with that one and things like that, and you know what, I did it. Best thing to do is to look at schools that have journalism or good schools of communications. Most large universities do. Or, if you'd rather go to a small school, look to major in English as you will have a good foundation in writing. While in school work on the school paper or tv or radio station, also internships! they offer them at most schools or during the summer you can line one up. That is the most important thing you can do to become a journalist.
I think it stinks that a teacher of all people said that to you, but let that be something that makes you want to strive to become one more and prove him wrong.
Keep me posted on the latest and if you have any questions, please ask! ]
The only reason why he said that is because in the future prices are going to go up as you can see on the internet but career income won't basically what i'm tryin to say is do not I repeat do not let anyone blow your dreams away stick with it if you want to become a journalists become one never and i mean never let anyone take that from youbut on the other hand let journalism be your 2nd hand job get a first hand job that pays a lot and journalism can be your activity job you know. ]
First off, most people change their major sevral times in college before they settle on one. Start with whatever interests you. Next journalism is an excellent career! Journalism is extremely important, as well as the other jobs. Journalists are responsible for spreading news and facts to the masses. Think of it in terms of money. He's a teacher. That's all I have to say. They don't get paid as much as journalists. ]
don't worry about what your biology teacher said. half of those answers were probably made up to suck up to the teacher anyway. if i listened to what other poeple said, i don't know what i would do. i am in college and i major in elementary education. every other person i tell this to scoffs and says that it's the most pointless thing to major in and is created for people with no brain. that hurt me a lot at first and i actually considered changing majors, but then i realized - what do i care what those poeple think? i like children and it's what my heart desires. it's all i want, and it's not pointless - it changes little humans' lives. and the same goes for jounalism - it's a very important profession and also has a great impact on other people and the society. you should follow your interest and don't feel pressured by what other poeple say. you can achieve great things in any career, as long as it is something you like. ]
If you really want to be a journalist, go for it. And just major in like Broadcasting, Writing, English, or something along the lines of what you want to do with your life. Who cares what the teacher and other students say. Its your life and your dream!
Good Luck (Oh yeah... don't think its a stupid thing to want to be, i have an older sister gettin ready to go to college for journalism)
Happy Holidays ]
