I'm a christian, but I have only gone to church about like 5 times in my entire life. (I'm 15 by the way). I've never read the bible, and I know almost little to nothing about it at all. LAtely, I've been feeling awful because I never grew up with god in my life. My parents don't like to go to church. I don't want to make this a big thing. Are there safe resources online I can look up for information?
Belladonna answered Sunday November 27 2005, 6:57 pm: My advice to you is not to go to sites aimed towards a particular denomination. These sites are very biased and follow THEIR own teachings and own interpretations of the bible. What you should do is read the bible. Read a little bit everyday, and think about it deeply. Try and look into the meaning of it. You could also join a bible study group, or a youth group. Your parents don't have to know. Youth groups especially are good for young people who want to develop their faith more, because the people who run them are very nice and understanding people who won't try and "convert" you and ram it down your throat. Perhaps you should also check out some christian bookshops in your area, but as I said before, make sure you try and find ones that are non-denominational (Unless you're wanting to join a particular religion)
You don't need to go to church to be a Christian, so don't feel guilty about this! Just like you don't have to know everything about religion. To be a good Christian you need to follow Christ's teachings and try and do his work. And of course, pray as much as you can. I wish you all the best. GDROB2 answered Sunday November 27 2005, 6:48 pm: Hi,
The following Web site allows for all kinds of questions to be asked as well as articles and is not pushing a denomination. You can access bible study lessons there as well that may serve as a helpful guide to you. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
There is also a Web site for books, speaches, collections on spirituality by some of the deepest teachers around. www.thebookmark.com
As far as sudying different religions I recommend besides the above site to stay offline. Online is usually where you will find zealots etc and those shoving their beliefs upon you or making you feel uncomfortable or scared.
I would go to any library and ask the librarian where to get started on religious studies. Then I would read more and go to a church service to find what you are best suited to believe. Religion should be your chpice not your parents necessarily.
I am not ultra-religious myself but have been to lectures, trips to conferences in the past in Boston. You may want to try cssentinel.com and csjournal.com too. Not pushing anything here on you but those are the spirituality links I know.
Like I said, go around to the catholic, baptist, mormon, methodist churches and see what you feel you ought to believe. Find out about all the religions including judiasm etc on your own. The search should not be an ordeal but rather one of enlightenment. [ GDROB2's advice column | Ask GDROB2 A Question ]
LoveNJstyle answered Sunday November 27 2005, 6:45 pm: hun, it's really ok. I grew up with it and the more you have to take tests and memorize things, the less you want to be christian. to get info, try going to a christian bookstore or a library and get a book about basic religious stuff like prayers and beliefs. as for sites, try a church site such as the dioscese if you are catholic and they should give you some references. go to a pastor and they'll guide you to some good info. <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]
