Learning disabilities

Question Posted Tuesday November 22 2005, 10:53 pm

I'm a senior in highschool. I take a lot of courses which require writing. It may not be apparent here butI am unable to write down my thoughts coherently. Writing scares me now. I freak out when there's a writing section on tests, when I have to write in-class essays, and so forth. My marks suffer because of this. It's so frustrating!! Someone suggested that it may a a learning disability...but I'm not sure. This just started this year. What does everyone else think?

It is possible that you have a learning disability. I would suggest talking to a teacher or your school counseler and seeing if they can provide you with a test to see if you have it. Just try and practice your writing skills at home. Just make up little stories and write about something that maybe happened that day, even if you just got a shower or something.. write about it and detail it and everything. But you also just might have low confidence in your writing and don't believe you are writing well, and since you THINK that.. it well tend to happen. I always do that. Whenever I find what I'm writing isn't good and everything I start to write even worse and it's just horrible essay/project. IT's because I'm mentally thinking," Oh this sucks I cannot write " that I pyshically begin to write badly. Like I said, just talk to a counselor or a teacher and get some tests done =] I hope I helped.

Love,
MELii

if it just started your senior year in high school i dont think that it is a learning disability. try getting a journal and writting in it every night about everything even if it is about a conversation you had with someone you dont like for ex. write about how you feel about your writing problems and let everything out on paper and it should help you...your jsut having a problem with getting your thoughts out on paper which is usual in girls our age...if it helps get a tape recorder and just talk about your life and whats going on it should help...hope i helped...xoxo

This sounds like fear based anxiety. It is possible that you have a learning disability, but I couldn't tell you based on the information you have given. To get an acurate assesment of your situation you need to have some testing done. What I suggest you do is go to your councilor and explan what your difficulties are. He/she will know what your next move should be. But there are people who overcome their disabilities all the time. They have to overcompensate for their weaknesses. I have included some websites that have more information about testing anxiety. Some of them explan the problem and some of them give you ways to overcome the problem. What you do is you figure out which methods would work best for you and your schedule then do them religiously. what you have to do is over-learn your material. This will give you the confidence and ability to write well on your tests.

i have the same problem and i noticed it more this year too. i think its low confidence in your writting, not so much the inablilty to organize thoughts. what i do that sometimes helps is i put my facts and information i want to use in the paper in bullets or a list then i kinda organize them to make seem like an organised paper. just add some words before the sentences and such. just take your time...some schools offer more time to take tests to those who need it. don't procrastinate and take it step by step...it really helps. just stay posative and keep working at it! <3

Excellent question. Typically, learning disabilities do not just start. They are always there as it is based in the brain. The thing is you may just have discovered it now.

I have a learning disability myself and have worked for a while in the learning disabilities association offices here. A lot of what you describe is typical about writing and inability to organize thought. My hunch is you are an auditory learner who can take things in, have them dictated on tape or written up from what is on the board or as you hear it but never on your own.

You do have a problem. You need to go with your parents and approach the principal and your teacher about getting a learning disabilities assessment done to accurately pinpoint the problem , cause, effect, and how to deal with it.

I know how frustrating all of this is for you. Just be lucky you discovered the issue now rather than in the future. I'll find you more links/research on learning disabilites if you would like. I hope this helps you.
