On the right side of the plate are three knives and one spoon.. From left to right: the salad knife, the dinner knife, the fish knife then the soup spoon. On the top side of the plate, there is one spoon and one fork and those are used for dessert.

MELiixMARiiE answered Sunday November 13 2005, 10:37 pm: The smaller fork is for the side course ( or the salad )
The bigger fork ( and the knife ) are for the main course
The big spoons for the soup
and the smaller spoon and smaller forks are for the desserts.
Or you can just think left to right. =] I hope I helped.

IxAmxCrying answered Saturday November 12 2005, 4:49 pm: Go left to right. It's that simple.
Silverware should be placed on the table in the order it will be used; silverware that will be used first should be found on the farthest left and right sides of the plate. [ IxAmxCrying's advice column | Ask IxAmxCrying A Question ]
Although the Salad & Dinner forks might be the same size, so then it doesn't matter which one you use. Or, usually if you're going somewhere nice to eat they should be placed in order, so you just go from the left to the right. :) Good luck. [ naimee's advice column | Ask naimee A Question ]
