how much water is too much?

Question Posted Sunday October 30 2005, 7:23 pm

just a quick question. i feel really dumb for asking this, but its been bothering my for a long time so what the heck. if you drink a lot of water (I MEAN A LOT) will it make your stomach stretch out and stuff? Because one time i heard about how those people who enter eating contests drink like gallons of water to make their stomachs stretch and able to hold more food. So i drink like up to 12-16 cups of water a day (4-6 bottles of water) to keep from eating everything in my sight and make my stomach full. but if it makes my stomach all stretched out than ew...does anyone know?

Look, water is the transport which everything happens in the body. The more you drink, the more toxins and such you lose and the less the body has to restrict since it is getting enough. I myself drink 1-2 gallons a day and I don't know where the ridiculous claim of "gaining water weight" came from with drinking too much water. Water is the best thing in the world for you and is a very forgotten and essential nutrient to our bodies. Drink up.

I used to work at a Mental Hospital. So did my friend Matt. They used to have patients who would drink so much water that they would gain 20 to 30 pounds in water weight. They called it being water drunk. It is a mental disorder, where the patient feels as if they must keep drinking water or they will dehydrate and die (or something to that effect) they ended up literally drowning their bodies. Anyway... You drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day so you will be fine. The amount of water you are drinking will not make you look like Homer Simpson. But, if you drink that much water and then run or sit, you can hear it swishing around in your stomach. (It's cool and gross at the same time try doing sit ups after drinking that much water....you'll see what I mean) Oh, yeah...point being that amount of water will not, and one more time for staying power...will not stretch out your stomach.

But, you must pee...ALOT.

You're water intake should be 50-66% of your body weight in ozs a day. That would mean a person weighing, lets say, 100 lbs should be drinking 50-66 ozs of water a day. You may be drinking a little more than necessary, but, it won't hurt you. Those guys you are hearing about are doing it all in one sitting. That is not good for you.

Good Luck!

To keep from eating everything in your sight eat many small meals a day consisting of fruits and veges (ex. a few grapes or celery sticks and peanut butter). I used to be a model and they told us that if you wanted to lose weight and stay fit then you are supposed to drink 8 glasses of water to day judging on your height. For every inch you are over 5'5 your supposed to drink more. Water does stretch your tummy but it wont cause stretch marks or anything. It will make you go pee a lot and when you pee is clear and has no smell then you are drinking the right amount of water and your excercising right. Next time you have check up ask your doctor what he recommends about your situation. I am not a doctor but I hope I helped!
