Throat

Question Posted Wednesday October 5 2005, 4:12 pm

I sing in church and at school and I have been working at the Haunted Graveyard, for thoes of you who dont know what that is, its like a haunted house where you scare people, anyways, It has made my throat sore and unable to sing, or get my voice back to how it normally is. Does anybody know how I could heal this and get it back to normal? last year it took almost a full year to get my voice back to normal. But if you people know anything I could use or do to get my voice back where i can sing and talk like i normally do It would be greatly appreciated! And i have already tried coughdrops, so anything else, unless you know of a cough drop that really works, but please tell me what brands and types of stuff you are talking about..THANKS!!!

The only thing I can tell you, is don't drink any soda or milk. That will hurt your voice and delay it from going back to normal.

you have to learn to "belt healthy". screaming is so bad for your vocal chords its not even funny!! as for singing, keep your sound int your mouth as opposed to your throat...it will save you a lot of sore throats. basically, avoiding yelling is the best thing but try room temp water, and a regular cough drop or gum. <3

Hi there,
I am a singer also and have this dilemma quite often.

I would suggest keeping a bottle of luke warm water with you while you're working at the haunted graveyard. It will keep your throat lubricated while you're working. Just put it where you can grab it easily. The same goes for at school and at church.

I know you've done the cough drop thing but it really is a good preventative measure and a soothing reliever. I use Halls Mentho-Lyptus Honey-Lemon brand. Also before singing try a teaspoon or two of honey. Any kind as long as it's pure honey. Mel-O Pure Honey is what I have in my cabinet. Drink tea...lots of tea. Take a break from soda and try Tazo Calm Herbal Infusion. It has Chamomile and other yummy stuff in it and it is caffeine free so you can drink as much of it as you need and not feel wired or be able to get rest.
But the most important thing you can do is to talk as little as possible to let your vocal chords heal. All of this other stuff will help with the sore throats and the swelling of your vocal chords but taking a break from talking will speed the process up. Still sing if you must but after you're done at the Haunted Graveyard ask your choir teacher if you can take a singing break for a few days to let yourself heal. He/she should understand. Just try and take good care of yourself. If all else fails and you're still having major problems go see an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. Your primary care doctor can refer you to someone.
Good luck and take care!

try swallowing a spoonful, or so, of honey. it soothes your throat by coating it and you should have your voice back reletively soon. :)

Drink lots and lots and lots of tea. My friend sings (Hoping to get a record deal sometime soon...) and whenever she performs, her throat is all scratchy sounding. When that happens, tea is her best friend. Whatever kind of tea you think you'd like, try it.
