I was told that its a sin because of the thoughts that go along with masturbation for the most part. Its bad because you are thinking of sex and for most people, its in a dirty nature. Especially if you are thinking of a certain person, or are using porn or something like that. Plus when you are masturbating, you are stimulating sex, which is forbidden before marriage. So masturbating is also what people view as a loophole, which isnt too good either. I hope I helped <3

To the best of my knowledge, this is the scripture that many people point to in order to say that masturbation is a sin:

(Genesis 38:8 - 10) "And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled [it] on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also."

See, Onan's brother was dead, but Onan was supposed to marry his brother's widow and make her pregnant and the resulting baby would be raised as his brother's baby, not his. Some people translate these passages as saying that instead of making her pregnant, he masturbated, then got killed for it because he "spilled [it] on the ground" (his seed).

If you read it, it's pretty obvious that's not what happened because it first says "he went in unto his brother's wife". So basically, he had sex with his brother's wife, then pulled out at the last second in an effort not to make her pregnant. He didn't want to "donate" his seed to his dead brother, but he still went ahead and had sex with his brother's wife, you see?

That's the way, I read it, anyway.

If there is another reason that the Catholic Church thinks it's a sin, I don't know what it is. If they have a different reason, it might be from one of the exclusively Catholic doctrines.

The Catholic Church believes that the Bible is not the only authority. Their teachings include such documentation as Catechisms, and Papal Encyclicals (defined as "authoritative teaching instruments from the Vicar of Christ" (the Pope)) which have been written and added to throughout the years of the history of the Catholic Church.

Because of this, the Catholic Church has many teachings, beliefs, and traditions which are different from a Christian who believes the Holy Bible is the exclusive authority of Christianity.

Their belief that masturbation is a sin may come from one of these other authorities, rather than the Biblical scripture I quoted.

Personally, i consider it a sin against the church and not so much as god because god never said we shouldnt or at least not in the bible. Sry if this is confusing but yea its a sin. Heres a key to go by for catholics.
if its fun, stop, its a sin.

By the book, Catholics consider it a sin. I was told that it's a sin because you're using your body in a way that God didn't intend for it to be used. But yeah, it's something that everyone does, including lots of Catholics. Your faith is personal though, and I cannot tell you what is and isn't right for you, or what you should or shouldn't believe, or what you should be doing. That's a conversation for you and God to have. Your heart will tell you the answer.

In the Catholic Religion it is recognized as a sin yes, BUT anything we do based on the "old catholic ways" is a sin haha eating chocolate? It's a sin we all do it though "gluttony, greed w/e" oh yeah protected sex is a sin? haha most people are wising up to that one i'd say but anyway what you are doing is a sin to the "old catholic religion" SO I WOULD PAY NO ATTENTION TO IT unless you are a religious freak then I would tell you you might be going to purgatory for masturbating? haha yeah...
ask me any thing else if you want

Acually it is a sin. Before I got confirmed, the pastor talked to all of us about these things. It is a sin and it says so in the bible. I dont really see why, although everyone has done it. Well a lot of people have.

Hey ♥
No, it is not a sin. Because, first your not committing the original sin, because your not having sex with another partner, youre doing it yourself.

Second of all, is because it pleasures you and God says whatever you feel like you like you do it. That's how I see it.

TheTeenGirl answered Sunday August 21 2005, 1:26 am:
Well, think of things this way. Even if it were to be a catholic sin, everyone has done this. Everyone has sexual urges in their life, and it won't make them a bad person doing it by masterbation. It may seem really wrong to sin, but when it comes to this we can only be human. It is natural, and everyone does it.
