condoms

Question Posted Saturday August 13 2005, 9:36 am

condom packages always say that they are like 99% effective if used correctly and stuff, but in school we learned that since condoms are latex like balloons, they have tiny holes in them that sperm can swim through. wtf. how effictive is that?

Here is some condom info for you...I have never heard that sperm can swim through them. If that was the case what would be the point?

They do have tiny holes, but not big enough for sperm to swim through, their very tiny and cant be seen by the eye. If condoms had holes that sperm could get through, it wouldnt be 99.9 percent effective. They just tell you that in school to promote abstinance.

The school lies. They really are 99% effective, but the school can't say that because its against the law, because they arn't even really supposed to be teaching about protection and only teach abstinence.

You need to be careful about where you get your information about birth control.

For one, your school may be in one of the many states where the only form of sex education that schools are ALLOWED to teach is "abstinence only." "Abstinence only" Sex Ed teaches you that the ONLY way to prevent pregnancy and STDs is to avoid having sex. While Abstinence is the BEST and MOST EFFECITIVE way, it is not the ONLY way. However, states that forbid full sex-ed have programs that skew the facts slightly to scare kids into not having sex.

Condoms are an effective and convenient form of birth control, compared to other forms of non-hormonal, non-surgical birth control. They are made of LATEX. LATEX is used in medical settings. People are supposed to wear LATEX GLOVES when handling the bodily fluids to avoid catching diseases (like STDs). Latex is not "Just a balloon." I'm not sure just how effective latex is, but it's one of the best substances you can get for the circumstances.

I'm not sure of the actual statistics on condom effectiveness for pregnancy and STDs, however, you may want to google it. PLEASE be careful of your sources though. Church or religion based websites are usually biased against condom use due to many churches considering birth control or premarital sex immoral; condom companies are biased for it becuase they make money. You want an impartial source that is not linked to a religion or a company. I would try your local health department, or a nonprofit organization online. And don't just take one site's word. "Shop around."

If you do have sex, which I think you should not, please use condoms or other birth control, and make sure that you use them PROPERLY. Remember, abstinence is best, but if you don't do that there are other options... Everything you do has a risk of pregnancy and STD with the exception of abstinence. Make sure you're ready for that risk when you decide to have sex.

I don't know what your school is teaching you but that's not true. I went to the GYN ->Gynocologist (if you didn't know) they told me all about condoms (had to go there for a cancer check up from what you can get from sex) and he said that they are 99% effective of preventing any sextual transmitted diseases and any pregnancies he told me how the condom was and how it worked. Let's just say this he didn't say anything about holes so sperm can run through. The only way to get pregnant from using a condom is if it rips or already has a rip in it. Or that 1% kicks in and the sperm just tears right through. I think the GYN doctors know better than regular school teachers, don't you? Hope I helped.

Informant_Girl answered Saturday August 13 2005, 10:09 am:
First of all, any birth control of the non-pill variety is NEVER 99% effective, even when used perfectly (which they almost never are). This includes condoms - whoever told you that condoms are 99% effective or somewhere along those lines was greatly exaggerating. Secondly, yes, condoms are latex, but the pores or microscopic holes in condoms are much too small for viruses, bacteria or sperm to pass through - making condoms one of the only forms of birth control that also prevents STDs, sexually transmitted diseases. (i don't think balloons are made of latex either, but don't quote me on that) so latex is a perfectly safe and logical choice for condoms; if you don't think so, look around the doctor's office on your next check-up - what material are his/her gloves made of? that's right - latex, because it's flexible, comfortable and keeps out a variety of disease-causing agents without costing too much. that being said, what makes condoms useless in almost all respects is misuse. never use an oil-based lubricant with condoms - the oil will punch holes in the condom that will make the pores large enough for sperm and STD agents such as HIV. never use an old condom or one kept in a hot, exposed place for a long period of time or one that's torn. a combination of spermicide and an condom increases a condom's power to guard against pregnancy, but not STDs. if unsure, consult this website [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) or a health professional. the best prevention of all is still good old abstinence. hope this has answered your question.

they aren't that effective, but i dont think there's a great risk of it swimming through the condom itself. its more of a 50/50 chance but, it's not that likely. you still have to be extremely careful.

-hope that helped!
