Extra elective

Question Posted Sunday August 7 2005, 6:54 pm

My course at university only allows me to take a certain number of credits (this is the same for all students, irrespective of how they do academically). There is this course I'd really like to do, but I've already got all the credits I'm allowed to take and there's nothing I can really drop. I like this course enough that I'm thinking of doing it despite the fact that I wouldn't be allowed to take the exam at the end and wouldn't get any creditpoints from it which would go towards my final graduating grade. Is this a stupid idea? I really can't see there being issues with me managing my time even with the additional load, as my current work load is really reasonable. On the other hand, I feel like I'd be wasting time doing an elective I'd get no credit for academically. It's by no means an easy course and it's not something that will be useful to me, it's just something I'm interested in. Is it worth taking on more just because it's interesting?

Well, this situation has befuddled me before, I must admit. This year, actually (for I am still but a lowly high school senior) I was faced with the startlingly painful decision of whether or not to take Physics again. I got a decent grade last year when I took it, but I didn't feel like I learned enough about the subject its self, and I wondered if I could raise my grade a little bit.

Although my situation is slightly different from yours, I think it's definitely still valid. I made the decision to take Physics again because it truly interested me, even though I will be recieving no credits for the course. It's a very admirable thing to take a class out of pure interest and not credit fufillment, and I do believe that it's a lot more satisfying that way.

Although I should be excersizing more reason in my answer--I'd say go for it. Have your fun while it lasts; and besides, who knows what could come of it?

Some colleges will allow you to audit a class. This basically means you sit in on the class but don't get credit for it. Talk to your academic advisor and see if this is an option for you. If it won't put a strain on your other classes, I see no reason why you shouldn't take it if it's something you're interested in.

I admire anyone that would even consider taking a course just because it interests them. I personally feel that, even though it may not go toward your degree or career choice, it betters you as a person. If you are concerned that you won't have the time this semester, or feel that it would be too much work, see if the course is offered during the fall or summer semesters. That way you have time to take the class without hurting your other requirements.

Knowledge of anykind is never a bad thing. Willing to keep learning and wanting to learn is a character trait that more people should have.

Good luck to you.

You could always take the course next year, right? So why not wait?
But I guess if you don't want to wait that long (or if this is your last year at university), you can go ahead and take the course. As long as you're not breaking any rules or taking on too much coursework, I think it's an okay idea. And you can always drop the class if it gets to be too much, right?
♥ Hope I helped.

Is it possible to simply take the course next year? This year, while picking my new courses for my university, I found that there were SO many options, that I would just not be able to take all of the ones I really wanted. However, instead of piling on more to my course load, I've decided that there is always next, or even the year after, because at my school (I'm not sure if it's the same with yours), you can take a different year's courses, in any year (excluding a 1st year taking higher than 3rd year courses). This means that although I can't take all of the courses I know I'll love, I can take them next year, or even during the summer session which is optional. You might want to look into this, because although taking the course and getting no credit would be valuable to your brain, it would be so much better if you could get that same impact while still getting the credit you deserve.
Last year, I wasn't able to take a course that I was interested in taking, so I waited until the optional summer semesters came around and I took it then, because I wanted to take it, I had the time to give it the attention it needed (academically speaking) and because I was able to get the credit for having actually succeeded in taking the course.

If you think you aren't over worked, go for the elective! But, I feel taht you should forget about it since it's not going to give you anything. If you do have time, you should if you really wanted to. Follow your heart! Hope my advice helps! Goodluck!
