How can I get out of debt?

Question Posted Wednesday August 3 2005, 10:35 pm

When I got a divorce from my husband, I had $57 to live on and ever since that time I have been struggling to get out of debt. I was left with a lot of health bills and everytime I try to get out of debt (already have had debt consolidation and filed bankruptcy. I was not able to pay for the debt consolidation as when the time came due to pay my rent and other current bills that was due. Also I have lost jobs because the place closed and/or shipped my job overseas. When ever I can I try to work extra hours. I am now working at a job that I am working over time on for main job and also for doing artwork for my job doing murals for the breakroom. I sometimes go in at 9am and don't get home until after 12am. Also I can't keep up with this because of my health issues as well. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well my mother is going through some of the same things...she lost about everything because of peoples screwin her over n because her fiance left her with nothing....What she is doing is claiming bankruptcy...THat is actually really good for her because then you get to start out with a clean slate n start all over without debt. N States have things to help out people financially with physcial problems that may slow them down. so just check into all of that n hopefully youll be helped out!

It's difficult to say without details about your debts, bills, and income, but I won't ask you to put that information on the internet. If you can spare the $30, buy a basic version of Microsoft money. Use the budget and debt reduction features.

If you want to make sure that it is worth it before paying for it, www.microsoft.com has a 90 day free trial.

My husband and I had debt, and always seemed to end up short at the end of the month until we got that program. We made a budget and started tracking spending. Now instead of being in the red at the end of each month, we actually have a little bit to put into savings each month.

I hope that helps you.

Have you tried contacting the creditors directly? A lot of times if you explain the situation to them, they can work out a different payment plan or even defer a couple of payments.

I don't know if you're aware but on hospital bills, they have to accept any amount you send them, as long as you send them something every month. It can be as low as $5. As long as you're showing an effort to pay the bill, they can't bother you.

You might try Consumer Credit Counseling. I have heard that they can help in this situation. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

There is also an organization called Modest Needs that offers assistance to people that have got in a bind and need help. They won't pay all your bills but they may pay a little towards them. The first link is to their site. The second link is to another page in the site that lists various help organizations that might be able to help you in your situation.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I know you're gonna hate this, but you need to pray and just have faith that everything will work out. It will eventually. I don't know about debt, but I understand the divorce situation because my parents divorced when I was almost five. Just know that there are people out there who care and are willing to help. I'm so sorry I couldn't help more.
