Hey. I was wondering, what is the best way to get highlights done...at a salon or at home using the highlighting kit. How long would it take if I were to get temporary highlights? How long would it last? How long would it take for the highlights to appear on my hair? I have like dark brown hair that looks black (I'm African American), and I was thinking of getting brown or light brown highlights. What do you guys think looks best?
P.S.: If I were to use the home highlighting kit, which is the best one?

If you try to do it yourself and you really don't konw what you're doing, there's a good chance it's not going to look right. So if you have really dark hair, some dark brownish highlights would look really good. :-)

Erinn_the_bamf answered Monday August 1 2005, 3:25 pm: In my opinon it's better to get a home kit. That way you would be able to pick where you would like them. And it's cheaper. I'm not sure how long it would take to get temporary highlights. But I do know they last about 1-4 weeks (not sure how you can keep them longer but my friend got them and that's what she said). It doesn't take long for them to show up. If you get them done in a salon they show up before by the time you leave the salon. You would have to read the back of the box to see how long the at-home kit takes to show up. The colors that would look best for you is brown or dark red. The best home highlighting kit to get is any kind that has a comb to show you where your hightlights would go. I hope I helped! [ Erinn_the_bamf's advice column | Ask Erinn_the_bamf A Question ]
xxjabsbabigrlxx answered Monday August 1 2005, 3:19 pm: If i was you id go to a salon because not all high lighting kits work on dark hair yeah they say they do but they really dont. I would use a light brown..but you know gold would look really good also..think about it. Home higlighteing kit iw ould use herbal essence. if you go to a salon use foils they dont rip your hair like a cap does. [ xxjabsbabigrlxx's advice column | Ask xxjabsbabigrlxx A Question ]
artistegirly answered Monday August 1 2005, 3:03 pm: Okay, if you've never done it befor I would sugest a salon! Also, if your hair is too thick of dark, home kits with dye won't even work on your hair, you need lightening gel or whatever it's called, which the salons specialize in. So i'm not going to reccomend any home kits, but I think light to medium brown would look super cute!
ThugGirl041790 answered Monday August 1 2005, 2:43 pm: Yes i think light brown highlights would look pretty in your hair.. and you should go get it done at the salon for your first time.. and the person that does your hair should be able to answer any questions you have lik how long they'll last and stuff.. then if you feel comfortable doin it your self the next time then i think you should go for it.. a good hightlighting kit is loreal.. thats what i use on my hair.. but ive tried all of em really and they all work the same i think.. good luck.,. ♥ Dez [ ThugGirl041790's advice column | Ask ThugGirl041790 A Question ]

tuttcutie answered Monday August 1 2005, 11:13 am: well getting highlights is a pain you have to keep doing them the kits are crappey you can tell you did them by yourself very expersive ones look good but you have to keep getting them or they look like crap but you can put lemon juice or beer in your hair then go out in the sun and it will highlight it then in a while it will fade and go away so you don't have to keep doing it! and still looks good hope i helped rate high please. and sorry its so long!
