ask_elmo answered Thursday July 21 2005, 8:47 pm: A thesis statement basically sums up what you have learned from something. A good way to write it is to write an if-then statement.
For example-
If x is less than 5, then x cannot be 3.
Using an if-then statement basically just makes it easier to write, and it also makes it obvious to your teacher where the thesis statement is.
Hope that helped a bit =)

Sporkster answered Thursday July 21 2005, 8:19 pm: A thesis is basically something you learned, something you believe, etc. and why or how you came to that point.
For example, a thesis for a book would be something you learned from it, why you think a character acted a certain way, the psycological state of a character, etc. Then you would prove why you thought that.
A thesis for a science project is something like "I believe that if x occurred, y would subsequently occur." You would then have to prove your belief with scientific fact.
I could probably give you a better example of a thesis if I knew which book you were reading. Feel free to ask me via private question, AIM, or email if you want to.
t0xicParadiSe answered Thursday July 21 2005, 7:36 pm: a thesis statement is when one sentence in the first paragraph gives the reader a clue about what your essay is going to be about its kind of like a main idea
so just give one main idead that you could strongly backup in your essay
hope that helps if you need anything else drop one in my inbox ♥ [ t0xicParadiSe's advice column | Ask t0xicParadiSe A Question ]
daughterofwily answered Thursday July 21 2005, 7:33 pm: A thesis statement is basically where you say what your parent is all about. It's a one sentence summary of your essay.
When you write your paper, what do you want to say? Let's say you want to say that some book, let's say, Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone, is a good book.
For yoru first paragraph, you would do a little ldead in, talking about the book's basic premise, unique features, etc. This would take up about four sentences. Then, for your fifth sentence, you would say something like, "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone'S whimsy and complex plot make it a powerful book for children and adults alike."
Then you would back that up with three paragraphs exploring its whimsy and complex plot, and then write a conclusion in which you refer back to your thesis. Make sure that each paragraph you have has a topic sentence (basically a mini-thesis) and then supporting details.
I'm very bad at explaining this in static form, but if you want help on your paper, feel free to contact me outside of advicenators, using my contact information on my column page. English is my specialty and I'd be happy to walk you through the thesis process. [ daughterofwily's advice column | Ask daughterofwily A Question ]
Dakmor answered Thursday July 21 2005, 7:15 pm: *groan* What do the words "summer vacation" mean to you? In my opinion, it's code for "no school". But, since you asked, it's good to start out with a question. For example, if you're writing a Persuasive about why convertibles are better than SUVs, then you may start out with "Would you rather have the wind in your face, going 60 miles an hour down the highway in a nice shiny car, or just driving a big, clunky, ugly truck?". Also, "Have you ever thought about..." is a good start. [ Dakmor's advice column | Ask Dakmor A Question ]
