Question Posted Tuesday July 12 2005, 8:53 pm

i used to be a cutter right? And at some times i still am. I went through a lot in my childhood and am just recoving from a consequential 3 years of depression. But thats not the problem its this: i have this crazy compulsion with picking at my skin. it has nothing to do with cutting, and i dont think it has anything to do with depression. Like, i do it all the time, even when im happy. theres no emotion at all attached to it, except sum kind of bizzare need, i guess. i cant help it. i did it like a little bit before, but no its so much worse! once i start i cant tear myself away. i make myself bleed. i cause scars and i hate it. Does anybody know anything about this? Anything similar? Any ideas? i'll rate high for good answers.

That's called threading, my dear.

You probably have a mental disorder [Like the hair-pullers] and you can get medications.

But do what ever you'd like to do.

It seems like you are confused about your feelings, but all in all you have described a post depression/obsessive compulsive symptom. The cause of you starting this could have been what you might call a break away. As you grew stronger in your need to stop cutting, you needed other things to sattisfy you. Its like smoking. When a smoker wants to quit, they may use a chewing gum containing little amounts of nicotine so that they can sattisfy there craving. When you feel the need to cut, your body recognizes it as a need to pick at your skin.
This also may be a symptom of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), which is when you start something, that seems to become an addiction. The more you don't do it, the more you crave it.
As a former cutter, and phsyciatry patient, I can tell you this; a good way to stop doing these sort of things to yourself is to start a new addiction. As you quit cutting, you started picking your skin, so as you sop picking your skin, start something new, and non-harmful. My counselor suggested a very good therapy, which worked. My therapy was wearing a rubberband on my wrist and when I felt the need to self-mutilate I would pop myself with the rubberband. Yes, it may have left welps or bruises, but in the end, it wasn't harmful to myself.
I might also suggest telling someone and getting proffessional help from a counselor.

You've described, almost word-for-word, the symptoms of a classic sort of obsessive-compulsive disorder. You are probably under a great load of stress, and your recent pain and depression has not helped matters any. Picking at your skin is a manifestation of your very shattered emotions. Animals, too, are known to pick or bite at their skin (some parrots will pluck themselves bare and die) in an obsessive way.
OCD is simply a cycle: you are obsessed with something (perhaps something stressful in your life, or just a general anxiety), and when you do a certain thing, you stop thinking about it. Therefore you're compelled to do that thing over and over to stop the obsession, or fear, from returning.

This sort of problem, exactly because you can't stop, and because you feel the need to do it, should be reported to a professional. There are therapies to help you discover and get rid of the stress and pain in your life, and techniques to help you get things back in order so you feel you have an amount of control. If all else fails, there is drug therapy, which I don't necessarily love. But it does work for some people.

This is not "in your head" nor do I think it's some juvenile attention-getting scam. If what you've told me is for real, you need to make some serious changes in your life to stop the compulsion to tear at your own body. Professional assistance is your best bet.

Picking at yourself in the way that you do isn't cutting, but it is an SI symptom. Although not as obvious as a cut mark across your arms, when you tear at yourself in the way that you do your attempting to create the small senses of euphoria that come with SI in such a way that is now more comfortable for you because you are no longer cutting. A skin picking habit should be treated in the same way you would treat a thumb sucking or nail biting habit. Find some sort of immediate consquence for the action for yourself, and train yourself to stop.

Are you receiving any help for this? Maybe a visit to a family doctor could be beneficial for you.

if you make yourself bleed and cause scars by picking at your skin, i'm pretty sure its just another form of SI (self injury)...even though you say you do it when your happy and there's no emotion tied into it...it may just simulate the feeling you had when you used to cut.

i would say google it. like, type in something like "forms of self mutilation/injury".

you could also try asking this question on the message boards at gURL.com. you have to like make an account, but its worth it.

hope i helped.

Cutting and picking at your skin could be signs of a compulsive disorder or signs that you want to harm yourself (you may not even realize it yet). Talk to a parent, a school counselor, your doctor, or even a trusted adult so they can help you get some help with this issue.

look hun, loosing blood is a bad idea and thats what your doing. it can cause to many other problems along the way and you dont want that. you have one life to live so make it last dont put urself in the hole. also, if your doing this cause of your life is bad and all dont worry everyone has their sunshine after rain. your time will come where everything will be right and if its not right yet then it isnt the end. but what im saying is that when you cut your opening your skin which can lead to infections serious ones, and lossing blood. they both are NOT a good idea. if this doesnt help find professional help before you end up in a hospital ;] .. need anything else let me kno
