Perhaps answered Sunday July 17 2005, 8:02 pm: Good work on your new fitness regimen! :) It's rad you're trying to get healthy.
A few things though, the first key to having visible muscle is losing fat. Someone can have lost of muscle but because it's covered in layers of fat you can't see it. So while, specific muscle centered workouts are good in order to have a lean build it must be paired with heart pumping cardiovascular workouts where you are really sweating and burning calories.
Also, form during your crunches is really important. You can be doing a lot of crunches, but if you do them the wrong way it doesn't help. Make sure your lower back is always on the ground and when you crunch don't so much curl (which can injure your back) as opposed to lift your chest off the ground while supporting your neck. Also make sure your shoulder blades are always off the ground for a more intense workout.
Varying your routine is important because in order to have the abs you want you need to work several different muscle groups that can't be targeted by crunches alone. Someone earlier reccomended a crunch where you lay on your side and lift your legs, that's good for the obliques. You can also try laying on your back and sticking your legs straight in the air, extending from the hip socket. Now without lifting your lower back and using your abs, raise your legs up and down, getting as close to the ground as possible without your back arching.
Here's a good but tough one. Assume a push up position, but have your elbows on the ground, making sure they are lined up directly from your shoulders, and rest your forearms on the ground (it should look like a 90 degree angle). Have your body fully extended, your neck extending from your spine, while balancing on your toes (like a pushup). Now hold this position while keeping your abs tight. Don't let your rear end go too high in the air, release your abs, or let your back curve into a U shape. The key is to keep your body entirely flat while holding in your abs. Try to hold the position for a minute or two, working up to longer times. Good Luck :) . [ Perhaps's advice column | Ask Perhaps A Question ]
