my puppy keeps biting people! he's a two year old doberman pincher, and he's absolutely adorable! but he has this problem with biting. he's made all my friends terrified of him, and the elderly lady across the street had to have stitches (which i had to pay for) when brownie bit her face. (just her cheek) i love him to death, and he hasn't bitten me since he was 6 months old, but i don't know if i should keep him if he's going to attack everyone he meets!
I have news for you... your dog is out of control if he bites a lady for trying to take her own son away from him. He is an aggressive and dangerous dog and deserves to be in a home where someone will actually train him to be a nice dog.
I hate it when people teach there dog that it's ok to be aggressive and bite other people. Especially high risk dogs like doberman pinchers.
Read on. Maybe you'll actually learn something. I do hope I've caught your attention this time.
You have a serious problem. You should probably talk to an animal behavoralist for help with this.
Doberman Pinchers are very powerful, and if you let a doberman bite someone, then they can inflict serious harm.
You should start by watching your dog at all times. Do not ignore the fact that he will probably bite. Do not let strangers come up to him, and do not tell someone that he's nice just because you don't want people to think that your dog is mean. You need to first accept the fact that you do not have a sweet adorable puppy right now. You have a full grown aggressive and very dangerous dog.
By being aware of the situation, you can then work on fixing it.
Read through my column. If you sort the answers by the topic of "Pets" then you can find many long answers on how to work with aggressive animals.
If you do not help your dog get over his aggression, then he will soon need to be euthanized. If he is too much for you to handle, then you should put an ad in the paper for someone who has the patience to teach an aggresive dog. He is going to need constant care right now.
Don't say things like, "he only bit the old lady on her cheek"
Do not try to make your dog seem nice by saying he "only" bit her on her cheek. You need to see your dog for what he is if you really want to help him.
If you try to ignore the problem, then he will never get better and will eventually need to be euthanized.

cailoisa answered Monday June 20 2005, 5:17 pm: Have you sent him to obedience training? It's probably a good idea. If it helps, I'll give you the legal perspective.
When you own a pet, there's a thing called "strict liability." You are aware that your dog bites, and so are many other people. This means that if your dog bites someone, you will have to pay completely for whatever damage your dog causes. This means that even if someone is harassing your dog (kicking, yelling, hitting, etc.) and the dog bites them, it is still your fault, and you are still liable.
JazzY answered Monday June 20 2005, 5:07 pm: I use to have a doberman pincser! I love those dogs. Anyways, when your dog bites someone, spray him with bitter apple spray. This is availible at pet stores. You can also ask your vet. about it. You could also muzzle your dog. We had to do this with my beagle and it helped him out a lot. You could also sign up for obedience classes if you haven't already. I'm really sorry about your dog having the biting problems! I hope I helped you out a bit and good luck in the future.

Julie174 answered Monday June 20 2005, 3:55 pm: train him. If you know he's going to bite someone, take him into a different room and do something to punish him. Especially if he does bite someone. If it doesn't work out, keep people away from him at all times. Like if your going to have a friend over, put him in a different room and lock it so he cant get out until the person leaves. sorry i couldnt be a good help.
jbdreamer answered Monday June 20 2005, 2:32 pm: A dog that can not be trusted should not be kept around. What if next time he attacks a child? It is not worth the risk.
Your lucky your neigbor didn't call animal control. They may have taken your dog away. I would talk to your vet about your dogs aggression to see if it is something he can be trained out of. Otherwise, (if it were me) I would put him down. An out of control animal is just a lawsuit waiting to happen. [ jbdreamer's advice column | Ask jbdreamer A Question ]
