It is always a competition between my best friend and I for who can get a better tan over the course of the summer. We do it naturally by laying outside instead of fake baking. We don't tan ecessivley or anything, but lately I've been wondering about skin cancer and all that. My mom told me to use some sun tan lotion to block the violent rays of the sun..but will that stop me from getting a good tan? Thx

missxmel answered Sunday June 12 2005, 11:41 pm: if your skin changes color form the sun it means that it has gotten harmful rays from the sun , why dont you just cheat and use self tanner [ missxmel's advice column | Ask missxmel A Question ]
ceece answered Friday June 3 2005, 5:33 pm: Suntan lotion will not stop you getting a tan. It may take longer to tan when using it, but the result will be a tan which lasts longer. Sunblock WILL protect you from penetrating rays which can lead to skin cancer if used properly, and you should always wear it when you're sunbathing. Always use at least SPF 15 to give you good protection, and re-apply regularly (every 2 hours, and more often if you are swimming.) If you don't protect your skin now, you could do it some serious damage, and UVA rays will age your skin dramatically. It seems good to have a tan now, but remember that a tan is a sign of damaged skin, and that exposing yourself to the sun will give you wrinkled, tired looking skin when you're older unless you are careful. neonxspork answered Tuesday May 31 2005, 10:41 pm: This will not stop you from getting a tan. It will actually help protect you and make your tan last longer. After tanning make sure you apply aloe or some kind of lotion to keep your skin moisterized - this will keep your tan longer. There are also special sunscreens made for tanning outside. XxSwEeTtArTxX answered Tuesday May 31 2005, 9:28 pm: no, it does not prevent you from getting a good tan. it actually helps cz it's harder for you to burn. if you know that your gunna be out there for like 2 hours or more, use spf 30 or higher and reapply on the places that burn easier on you every now and then. otherwise, use something like spf 15 or 8 depending on how long you'll be out there. you'll still get a good tan and you won't have to worry about getting burned. if you burn alot when you're younger it usually ends up that you get skin cancer, so if i was you, i might be worrying a little bit more about protecting my skin than how dark it gets......
rainbowsend answered Tuesday May 31 2005, 7:46 pm: Most of what I've read and heard lately is that current research is saying that many cases of skin cancer are probably caused by really bad sunburn as a younger child, and not by tanning like people think.
So tanning a lot isn't necessarily going to increase your chance of skin cancer.
However, excessive tanning does cause premature wrinkles. You know those women with really rough leathery skin and wrinkles at age 40 who look a lot older than they actually are? Those are the women who probably spent their young summers tanning.
So cosmetically, you have to decide what's the greater of the two evils- being paler now, or looking 60 at age 40?
Sunscreen, like SPF 15, SPF 20, SPF 30, SPF 45, is designed to protect your skin from the sun's rays. If you slather up with it, you're not going to tan as quickly. However, suntan lotion or oil with a low SPF, like SPF 4 or SPF 8, isn't going to slow down you tan very much, or provide a lot of protection either.
I personally choose to use SPF 15. I feel protected, yet still tan a little. However, if I'm spending all day in the sun (like at camp or a waterpark), I go for something stronger. [ rainbowsend's advice column | Ask rainbowsend A Question ]
xoxoPrettyNPinkxoxo answered Tuesday May 31 2005, 7:27 pm: Hey! The other answers aren't really that clear, but No, sun tan lotion does not affect your tan. You should definitely wear it though because all it does is protect your skin from the UV rays which DO cause skin cancer.
loving_monkey answered Tuesday May 31 2005, 7:23 pm: Ok trust me If you tan naturallu you WONT get skin cancer! and if you do what your mom said you wont get tan, sun block and iteam like that protects your skin from the sun and doesnt let it get to your body! Well good luck!

shortiebebe021 answered Tuesday May 31 2005, 7:23 pm: no it won't, unless you put so much sunscreen on that you're covered in it and your skin cannot get any access to sun at all lol. sun tan lotion will prevent sunburns, freckles growing, and sometimes skin cancer. remember, just don't tan too much because that can be real bad for your skin! good luck!! :) [ shortiebebe021's advice column | Ask shortiebebe021 A Question ]
