Three days ago I got bad congestion. Today, this morning, I wake up and can barely manage a whisper. Theres no pain in my chest, when I breath or swallow or anything, just the usual discomforts of inflamed skin. However, it is progressively getting worse. I ahve to communicate with pen and paper now! Is it possible I have tonsilitis? What should I do to help it?

hope you get better!

What is laryngitis?
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx, or voice box, that often affects your voice. The larynx is made up of cartilage, ligaments, and muscles and is located just above the trachea (windpipe). Two vocal folds, which are covered with mucous membrane, stretch across the larynx. These folds vibrate as air passes through them and produce sound. Most of the time, laryngitis is temporary and comes on quickly.
What are the symptoms of laryngitis?
The main symptom of laryngitis is a hoarse voice. Your voice may sound raspy, deeper than normal, or break occasionally. Sometimes, you may only be able to whisper or you may completely lose your voice.
Other symptoms may include a dry throat, coughing, and difficulty swallowing. You may also have a sore throat, but it usually resolves before the voice is affected.

jbdreamer answered Wednesday May 11 2005, 10:29 am: It could many things, like Strep for instance (which you need antibiotics for.) Whatever it is, you should deffinetly see your doctor if you are getting worse. Warm tea or cider should help sooth it in the mean time. Cold liquids will actually inflame your throat more. You could have anything from strep throat to tonsilitis to laryngitis to pollyps or even cancer (not, I'm not trying to scare you, just make you realize that there are many differnt things that can manifest in the throat/esophogus/trachea).
This could simply be drainage from your sinuses irritating your throat.
