I have to give an oral presentation in fron otthe whole class, but I suck at public speaking. I start getting really red and then i start to shake and I stumble over words. Right now I am absolutly terrified at the thought of giving a speech. What can I do to overcome this fear?
Please dont give me an answer that says "you will fail everytime"

have a quiet word with your teacher thery're alone. explain to them that you have panic attacks and have been having them and getting really really nervous for weeks just thinking about reading in front of everyone. then try and arrange so you just have to read in front of her/him. thats what i started doing at school and college when i had presentations. its still scary but alot easier. loomber answered Sunday May 15 2005, 9:56 pm: okay, to overcome your fear, practice reading outloud in front of you family or friends or read aloud in your church or watver cuz the best way to overcome a fear is to look at it straight in the eye, take a deep breath and just do it. so, in front of ur class breathe in for 5 seconds, breathe out for 5 seconds and say i can do it and you will do fine [ loomber's advice column | Ask loomber A Question ]
russianspy1234 answered Friday May 13 2005, 4:01 pm: this is a hard one, i dont really have trouble with public speaking. i mean i tense up when i have to do it, but i do it anyways. thats my suggestion to you, feel the fear, and go for it. getting red is no big deal, the stumpbling over words is a bit bad. are you going to be using note cards? the best way not to stumble is to actualy write out the speach word for word. i know your teacher probably told you not to, and it wont look natural but you wont stumble. and theres no shame in correcting yourself. teachers tend to understand that some people just have trouble with public speaking. just try no to go too fast, and pay attention to your words. StagePerformer answered Thursday May 12 2005, 3:39 pm: Hey there!
I remember the first time I gave my oral presentation in class. It wasn't easy but you know there are ways to overcome this....
*Have visuals-from pictures, diagrams, PowerPoint. Most of my classmates did the Powerpoint presentation. While talking in front of class they did point and discuss about what their research.
*Practice in the mirror while giving a presentation or in front of your friends the more people the better.
*Whenever talking speak slow and take your time. Other students are there in class to listen to what you say not to point out mistakes.
*Before you start the presentation ask for like 2 minutes--inhale and exhale.
*Last but not least, you could always have a flash cards with you to help you whenever you get stuck on something.

I talked with my mom about it. and she told` me just to` look` at a spot on the wall` and` concentrate on`it` the whole time..`or find 2` spots. and look` back and`forth` every` couple` minutes!` just`act like`` there` IS no` audience and you're
just talking to yourself. But` the whole 'spot on the` wall thing is really` effective!` Because you're not looking` someone and making eye` contact with` someone who` is` making` weird faces or possibly laughing!` Just`don't sweat it..` it'll` all be fine!` Good` Luck..`Hope` i helped` =/ [ ThatsHott18's advice column | Ask ThatsHott18 A Question ]

Alin75 answered Tuesday May 10 2005, 8:18 pm: Now this is a question i can relate to on a very personal level. I have had to do far more than my fair share of public speaking in my life and I loathe it as much as you do. There is no trick (like the old "picture them all naked" crap) that will help you in my opinion. What you need to do is to remember the following things: 1 Most of the time, the people you are speaking to arent that interested in your presentation- it looks as though they are staring at you but often they arent paying as much attention as it seems 2- The only way you can ever hope to feel comfortable up there is by mastering whatever subject you are dealing with- so, be prepared, have no doubt that you know all there is to know 3- Go SLOW... most nervous people rush it and thats one reason why the stumble 4- When you practice your speech, try doing it without your notes a few times and just improvise it as you go along (rather than memorising it strictly), as though you were having a conversation with someone- this will help you get a more natural flowing feel to it 5- Finally dont over stress yourself prior to the speech, give it one final run through on the day but no more, remember you know your stuff and that in the end this speech is not all that important anyway. just_ask_me answered Tuesday May 10 2005, 8:06 pm: I had the same problem before, I hated speaking in front of the class. The best way to get over this, is to act like it's not a big deal at all. Practice in front of the mirror, in front of your family, anyone who you are comfortable with. Ask them how they think you did and you'll gain confidence each time. When you go up in front of the class, remember, you are not the only that has to do this! Take a deep breath, act like it's nothing, go right ahead and start. As soon as you know it, everything will be over and it won't seem like such a bid deal. hope i helped hun xo [ just_ask_me's advice column | Ask just_ask_me A Question ]
