Discharge

Question Posted Saturday May 7 2005, 11:01 am

This may seem like a weird question to ask, but sometimes i get vaginal discharge. It is like gooey white stuff in my underwear. I read in magazines that is normal when you are about ready to get your first period, but its been along time and i havent gotten my period yet! I wash around there every night and i wear pads to keep it from not killing my underwear but it still smells bad and keep coming! What should i do?

Yes, it's 100 percent normal. Girls get it a while before their start their first periods. Wear scented panty liners to help with the smell. I would get your pads and tampons together for when you do start*

Hope I helped!*

well it could be that your horny because the vagina gets really wet when your horny. is it cottage cheese looking? if so then thats a yeast infection and you should definatly go see your gyno. if its clear then its regular discharge.

Everyone else is pretty much right. It is normal to get discharge, it will continue after you get your period, and the only thing you can do is wear pantiliners if it feels that gross.

There are a few points that were missed.

Wearing pantiliners for much of the month is going to get old, and it's perfectly okay to get veginal discharge on your panties. It washes right out. Trust me.

Second, vaginal discharge does have a slightly "funny" smell. As long as that smell stays constant, you're okay. If it's the same as it was when you first started getting it, that's just fine. But if the smell ever changes, you should really go to your doctor. Also, if it smells really strong, you should get checked out... if you only notice it when you're changing your pad, then it's fine.

A good rule of thumb is that your vaginal discharge should start clear and dry white or slightly yellowish. If it ever turns white or yellow when wet you MUST see a doctor. This can be a sign of yeast infection or something more serious.

Sorry if this is too much information.

You're right - it IS normal for discharge to happen. It will happen before your body is menstruating and then throughout your adulthood. Pantyliners can help, though most discharge is not heavy enough to ruin your panties.

One little known fact is that while hygiene is important, too much washing can actually rid your vagina of healthy bacteria. This can cause strong odours and even infections. When washing your bits (not more than once daily), make sure you clean the folds of your labia (vaginal lips), but DO NOT put soap into your actual vagina. Your body can clean itself out.

As for your period, all you can do is wait. If you are extremely concerned about why it hasn't come, then your doctor is the best person to ask. Likewise, if your discharge is noticeably smelly, a weird colour, or if there's pain in your vaginal area - get to a doctor.

Everything is probably fine. Just have patience for your period AND your vagina. Your body is working to no deadlines, but it's inescapable that sooner or later your period will come.

It is completely normal to get this kind of discharge...every girl gets it. You may get vaginal discharge for a couple of years before you get your first period...Only time will tell when it's your time. Try wearing pantiliners so that you will feel more comfortables and so it doesn't get all over your panties. And about that smell...discharge may have a mild smell, but if it starts to smell really strong and almost fishy, then you will have to see a doctor because you might have an infection.

Good Luck
I hope this helps

You can start getting discharge at a young age and not get your period until you are around in your late teens. It's just another way for your body to cleans itself and it's natural to get it. If you notice that your discharge is becoming heavier at one point, than that tells you that your period is coming. Don't worry, you'll get your period eventually; it's just no one can tell you exactly when you'll get it.

You can't really do anything. Your discharge won't go away until you're older. Just keep on wearing light pads or thick pantyliners and that will help you, just in case you get it during school or whenever you're out.
