Question Posted Monday April 25 2005, 11:34 am

Hi! I need to make a webpage for a class through either Microsoft FrontPage or Notepad, but I wanted to know do you need a FTP program to view the webpage? I'm trying to work on the webpage but its not viewing correctly. Thanks in advance!

hi!

FTP stands for File Transfer Program. If your not moving your page from your computer to another computer over the internet, you don't need one. :)

When you create your webpage, it needs to be saved with an extension of .htm or .html. You may need to change the settings in windows explorer (not internet explorer) to show file extensions so you can change it. If you used notepad, it will likely save it with a .txt extension and then you will see the code, not the page.

*** ADDED INFO ***
Start out with a very simple page - call it test.html. Open notepad, and type the following:
<html><head><title>Testing</title></head>
<body>
<h1>Testing</h1>
<p>Does this work?</p>
</body>
</html>

When you save in notepad, make sure you save as an .htm file - no .txt. You have to select "all file types" from the drop down box on the save window. It may ask you if your sure. The file's icon should contain a blue e - like for internet explorer. If you can get this to work, then your problem is with the code.

If I'm not making any sense, maybe this site will: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

*** END ADDITION ***

<s>To give more help than this I need more information. Like: Did you decide to use FrontPage or Notepad to create your page? What web browser are you using to view the page? (probably Internet Explorer, but it's good to be sure) What results do you get when you try to view the page?</s>

Good Luck!

To view a Webpage, you don't need any type of FTP program (like SmartFTP, or CuteFTP).

However, assuming your host does not have an online file manager (where you can upload files) you'll most likely need an FTP program.

Programs like Frontpage and Dreamweaver both have built in FTP utilities and upload capabilities though.

For a simple web page, you should be able to view it in any browser, or at least any recently released versions... It shouldn't look too different when opened in different browsers...

If your page uses server side scripting like SSI, you might need to upload it to a server that supports such scripts, but if it's a web page for a class, do you really need to do that?

I don't think you need an FTP program. Usually it's for uploading right?

But if you want to view your webpage correctly, I'd suggest sign up for Geocities, copy and paste your html, and view. Just as a backup ya know :)

I'm sure that you don't need a FTP program. I'm not really sure why it isn't viewing correctly. There may be something wrong with the codes you put on it, possibly; otherwise it could also be the internet provider you have.
