MFS answered Thursday April 21 2005, 3:05 pm: Odds are, it is just an area that is growing and has become sensitive. It could be some various form of benign cyst. It could indeed be cancer, though if breast cancer isn't prevalent in your family at young ages, the odds of that are really quite low. When in doubt, which it seems that you are, talk to your doctor about it. At worst, they'll order an ultrasound or mammogram (yeah, those are great fun... and yeah, I'm a guy and I've HAVE had a mammogram...) [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
Michele answered Thursday April 21 2005, 2:59 pm: Breast cancer at your age is very rare, but not un heard of. Usually breast cancer lumps do not hurt. They are usually hard. It could be a cyst. Do you drink any caffiene? Cola's, coffee, tea? Do you drink a lot of caffiene? That can give you cysts. Also if you are due to get your period soon, that can cause your breasts to feel lumpy and be sore. If you are not SURE, you should have it checked. I know you don't want to go to the doctor for that. At your age, I dreaded that first visit to the gyn/ob doctor. Do you know a nurse, who could advise you?

zapreth answered Thursday April 21 2005, 2:54 pm: Yes, it could be. However, I don't think that's what's wrong. You need to see a gynocologyst to be sure, but sounds most likely that you have something called Fibrocystic disorder, though my gyno said it's so common the disorder is usually dropped. That is basically a cyst or pimple deep under the skin that can harden. They are not dangerous and can be removed with minor surgery (if hardened) or something called aspiration (draining the fluid, like popping a pimple). With your age you will more than likely not need a mamogram. They generally use ultra sound to test a young woman who has not had children. It's a little cold and embarassing, but it doesn't hurt at all. Make an appointment asap just to ease your mind. I'm sure it will be fine. Let me know.
