Question Posted Friday April 15 2005, 3:55 pm

I have heard that you should try and reduce the amount of calories you eat gradually (like, one week go from 2000 to 1800, and then the next go to 1600, instead of going from 2000 to 1000) to encourage the body to burn fat and not protein from muscle. Is this true?

NO! The average female between 11 and 18 years of age needs between 2100 and 2300 calories per day. This means that if you have any less than about 1900 you could not only gain weight but totally lose energy.

Well, I know that if you reduce the amount of calories you take in gradually, then that will help you lose weight. I don't exactly know if this encourages the body to burn fat and not protein from muscle but it does in a way.
