anorexia..

Question Posted Monday April 4 2005, 9:24 pm

a lot of people keep coming up to me and asking me if i'm anorexic. i'm starting to thing i am now. people always tell me how skinny i am, but i think i'm fat. and i'm obsessive over what i eat, and i always weigh myself.

it's my stomach i don't like. when i stand up and squeeze my stomach there's like 2 inches of fat! is that normal?! =(.. i feel so fat. i want to try to have NO fat there. does anyone know any good exercises to get rid of that fat?

so i have 3 questions:
-do you think i might be anorexic?
-is all that fat normal? you can compare me to a normalish stomach or whatever, i don't care.
-what are some good exercises to get rid of that fat?

i know its hard to overcome these feelings. Whenever you eat get up and do something, whether its a household chore or riding your bike or roller bladeing or something. this should help you feel less guilty. situps and crunches help tone down tummy fat. that fat you described is normal and healthy though. as for how much you should wiegh depends on how tall you are. AVOID SCALES. i know that part is hard too but you really need to do that. if you decide to eat right and healthy and just cut out junk and sugars then maybe weigh yourself every other week. at first with exercising and eating more you should gain weight so dont worry about that. drink lots of water. it helps fill you up and lose weight if youre still bothered. youll have to pee like a racehorse but thats okay. Dont sqeeze your stomach either. it will make you feel bad. You can get through this. i know you can.

Hi there,

I'm not sure of your exact circumstances but the fact that others are saying your skinny and that your obsessed about food tells me that you are indeed either on the road to becoming anorexic or are anorexic.

As females we all seem to base our self worth on the size of our stomach. I don't think any of us escapes this to a lesser or greater extent. This creates much unhappiness, for we're constantly unhappy with our self image.

The best advice I can offer you with the information you've provided is first off ... look at yourself in the mirror and say "I'm beautiful." I'm positive that you are. Keep this in mind, about 90 percent of your friends are likely feeling fat or not beautiful in some other way and suffering from the same insecurities as you are. Next imagine all the things that really do matter in life to you, what ever they may be and engage in them, focus on them. If you enjoy reading, writing, going to the beach, the mall allow some time to do these things ... schedule it in as if it's as important as completing your homework assignments.

Next ... don't extract anything from your diet. Eat what you love but in moderation and excercise ... no not the boring going to the gym excercises that everyone drops off once the routine gets boring ... engage in activities you like, perhaps swimming, snowboarding, skiing, surfing, running, basketball, walking, and do it with a group of friends (as that's way more fun!!!!).

Basically enjoy what this life has to offer and try to focus less on your self image and work more on your confidence. The fact that you had courage to ask this question tells me you have what it takes to do this!

Tell me, when you meet someone you really like, I mean connect with, does their physcial appearance remain a part of the influence of why you like them? No, it's probably what they give to the relationship, or that your personalites are a good match.

If your really eager to tone your stomach crunches, lying on your back and rising your legs straight up and to each side and alas yes even pushups help build core and inner muscle strenght .. do as much as you can about three times a week, but please do not make this an obsession ... play your favorite music and try to make it fun, as a part of "your time" ...

All in all, I honestly do not think you have to worry being fat, but I do worry that your obsessed about it so please if I can do anything else to help, don't hesitate to e-mail me ...
aly_boschee@yahoo.com.

I hope you have a terrific week and wish you well and lots of happiness and good fortune!

Two inches of fat isn't normal, no - most people have so much more than that!!! Seriously.
Yeah, I think you're at least developing anorexia. :( For now, try and stop weighing yourself, and don't always look at the calories on each thing you eat. It's fine if you think it might have LOADS of calories and you don't want to overeat - that's totally normal, just don't be checking the calories in every single biscuit or cereal bar you eat, you know? You might want to look up some help organisations online - they often have support message boards with people who are going through the same thing and can help you get through it. Anorexia is a severe mental illness...you do need to go to the doctor or find a group who can help you. Even if you think you're too fat to be anorexic - that's actually one of the main symptoms of it.
You're half way to getting better already hun - admitting you have a problem is half the battle!
Good luck!!
Blessed Be,
Rach xxx

Anorexia nervosa is a psycological body image problem. You are showing signs of BECOMING anorexic, but I don't think you are. You eat, you are just obsessive over what you eat, that's not such a bad thing. The constant weighing IS an issue though. Your body image should be more in how you feel, not really how much you weigh. Did you realize that a huge percentage of those skinny models are actually concidered obese? It's not because the weigh too much, it's because they have a high percentage of body fat compared to their weight. So weight isn't everything. Now to help with your tummy? It sounds to me as though you need to join a gym if you can. Many have good programs with staff that can help you target your problem areas, like belly flab. Ab workouts and crunches should help, but you may need to eat more to help build the muscles once you start exercising. Luck!

1. You're only anorexic if you continuously starve yourself depriving yourself of the nutrients your body needs. If you are eating very little (and I mean VERY little) everyday, then yes, you are anorexic.

If this applies, you need to eat to burn fat. When you starve yourself, it slows down your metabolism making it easier to gain weight. So gradually increase your intake of calories and exercise to get that metabolism back on track.

2. Yes that fat is normal. I weigh approximately 115 lbs and I pinch my tummy and I get the same amount of fat. It's completely normal, especially for us women to have a layer of fat in our abdominal area. That's why you don't see a lot of women out there with six packs.

3. To rid that fat you have to combine cardio with toning exercises. Cardio is any exercise to get your heart rate up like running, jogging, jumping jacks, tai bo, etc. After you do cardio, your heart is still at a good pace and your body continues to burn calories in cardio mode even after you stop. If you combine toning and weight training exercises immediately after your cardio, you will lose the fat. Do circut training like 15 mins of cardio, 15 mins of toning, then back to cardio, then back to toning.

It works, trust me. I've been doing it for about two months now and I definitely noticed a difference. I only go to the gym two days a week due to my busy schedule, eat regularly, and work out for two hour sessions mixing up cardio and weights. Already I've lost 6 pounds and my tummy is definitely gaining tone. Also for another metabolism boost, drink green tea. It tastes good too (with sugar or splenda)!

Good luck and hope this helps you!
