MFS answered Friday April 1 2005, 11:32 pm: I've written a few songs...
my trick on writing lyrics: pick a topic, but never write anything very specific... use vague wording. Why? Because as you write the song, you have some particular meaning... but when someone else hears it, by leaving the words a little nebulous at times, you give them the opportunity to apply their own meaning to the words, and the song ends up meaning something special to them.
Also, rhyme isn't essential to a good song. In fact, most of mine don't rhyme at all. Rhythm is far and away more important to crafting a solid song.
Don't be afraid to use devices such as alliteration and metaphor/similie in your songs. Use lots of imagery, symbolism, icons, etc... tapping into archtypes makes your job easier - but stay away from cliches.
Avoid overuse of "B" and "P" words - those letters are very harsh and can really sound like shit - seriously... a singer could even damage a microphone from popping those letters.
Some people write lyrics, then apply music afterwards. I tend to create a line for a song... and have a melody already applied to it... I create the words and music at the same time. I'll repeat it over and over in my head long before I write it down... then, once I've written out the lyrics, I sit down with either a guitar, bass, or keyboards, and figure out the song - transcribing what I've heard in my head.
If you'd like, feel free to send me a song concept or two that you have - I'll be glad to give you feedback on them. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
partygurl24 answered Friday April 1 2005, 11:20 pm: I also enjoy writing songs. Well, to get a good topic think of something tragic that happened to you or someone you know, and make it into a song. Or you could just make up a story about something seiuos like rape, dad abandoning family, teenage girl getting pregnant and the baby daddy left withouut a traces...stuff like that. The song could be emotional, sad, and slow. Those kind of songs that deal with the horrors of everyday life put into a song, can really attract fans. You could also think of something funny or embarassig that happened to either you or someone you know and make it into a party song. It will be easier writing a song that was made out of a story or something that happended. I hope I helped! [ partygurl24's advice column | Ask partygurl24 A Question ]
WTF answered Friday April 1 2005, 9:47 pm: stay away from cliche stuff, try to be original. for poems, they dont have to rhyme, so dont stress yourself over finding something to sound good.
for songs, i just started writing my own lyrics, and an easy way to get ideas is to look through the newspaper and take good articles and write about them. use metaphors and similies for comparisons instead of just boring words and saying them straight out, it makes the lyrics deeper sounding. deceivingxheart answered Friday April 1 2005, 9:29 pm: I love writing poems. I write a lot, and especially about boys who I've had trouble with, or anything like that. Here are some tips: Don't judge your poems until your done. That'll really help. Maybe ask someone after you're done. A friend or cousin. Get someone else's point of view. I hope that helps!
Good luck! [ deceivingxheart's advice column | Ask deceivingxheart A Question ]
azngemini answered Friday April 1 2005, 9:04 pm: oo I used to write a lot of poems, but now I just write it when my english teacher makes us write it. all my poems are likee.. depressing and serious. I dont think that writing happy poems is a good idea because the poem will just sound stupid and pointless. sad poems will really touch people and send them a message. and they wont sound as corny as non-sad poems.. lol

PrincezzMari answered Friday April 1 2005, 7:21 pm: well.... i know what you mean actually... i used to do that kind of stuff too, and that same thing happened to me. i never really found a trick to make it sound al corny, and i don't know if this really helps, but just write what you think... you know, whatever's on your mind, or what you're feeling. it worked for me, and i'm HOPING it'll work for you too, because if you write what YOU are thinking or feeling, then it shouldn't sound corny at all... and if it does, then either you weren't really writing what was truly on YOUR MIND, but what you thought sounded better (which it usually doesn't if it's not from YOU), or you're full or corny thoughts! but don't worry! maybe you could add some of your funny thoughts, and it'll sound awesome! i REALLy hope i helped!!! *MaRi* [ PrincezzMari's advice column | Ask PrincezzMari A Question ]
