Dog training

Question Posted Monday March 21 2005, 9:42 am

I have a 5 year old male miniature dacshound. His problem is that he pees inside the house on the carpets when we want him to go pee outside. He is potty trained but still goes to the carpets like he does not care. We smack his bottom whenever he does and sometimes spray a dog and cat sour spray in his mouth to basically tell him "no" but nothing seems to get through his head. If I don't get to controlling his actions soon my parents are seriously considering sending him to the pound. What should I do?

I have a miniature daschaund and we have the same problem. Most of the time he is okay and goes out when he needs to, but when we are not home he obviously cant go outside. We have even tried hitting him, rbbing his nose in it, and all that other stuff but really it all boils down to one thing:
Small dogs have small bladders.
They cant hold it longer than bigger dogs can, so when they have to go-- they have to go, and NOW.
Try using POSITIVE enforcement rahter than negative. When you leave the house, reward him with a treat if he does not pee or poop inside. Then Immediatley let him out, the poor thing is probably about to burst. When you are home though, give him treats when he goes outsdie and he will know what is good and what is bad then. It may take a while to get him used to that routine but it will be worth it.
I know my daschaund has bascially a routine. He gets up at the same time nearly everyday and needs to go out, and usually around the same time he needs to go out everyday too. Watch for patterns like that in your dog so you know when he has to go and you dont have to make him wait.
I hope it all works out and you and your dog do well together :)

Hello there,

Try crate training. It is what we do with our dog, and there is no other way we know of.

Keep him in a cage for about a week . Let him out like twice a day to stretch his legs and let him out immediatly to the backyard so he can pee there.

You should consider taking him training again.
Also, if when he was younger he never used to this you should take him to the vets, 5 years old is quite old for a dog (i know some live up to the age of 16 and whatever but 5 is still a bit old) When my dog turned 5 she started doing the same thing when normally she would pee outside so we took her to the vets and it turns out she only pee'd inside because she couldn't hold it because she had a bladder infecction.
Take him for a check up at the vets because bladder infecctions are painful for dogs.
Good Luck

Every time he takes a crap or piss on the carpet if you catch him in the act. Kick him in the side as hard as you can. Dogs are dumb they dont get why they're being sprayed after they did the act, even if you showed them the diareah stained carpet. They're to dumb to put 2 and 2 like that together. Get a shocker collar too. Those will work great.

Firstly, you need to always call your Veterinarian if this is a new bad behavior. If he suddenly starts to have problems with his bladder or bowels, then it's likely that he has a health problem.

After you have established that he is good and healthy:

He is NOT potty trained if he continues to go inside the house. When an animal is potty trained, it means that they know not to go inside the house. Your dog does not know that he isn't supposed to go inside the house.

Crate training is a good idea. Get a crate large enough for your puppy to move around in, and put it in a secure place. When you are not going to be able to keep watch over your dog, such as when you leave, or when your sleeping, put him in the crate. Dogs are instinctually clean animals, and will not go to the bathroom in their sleep area as long as it is possible. So, as long as you don't keep your dog in the crate for too long, he shouldn't mess it up.

But, if you do end up leaving him in there for too long, then he will have to go to the bathroom. This will give him some very messy habits of going to the bathroom near his sleeping and living area.
Leaving a dog in a training crate for too long will also cause him to get a urinary tract infection because of the prolonged period of holding his bladder.

So, get a crate first off.
Don't leave him in for too long.
and, as soon as you get a chance, let him outside to go pee.

Now, when you first start training him, you should treat him like a puppy. This means, take him outside to pee or poo every 2 hours (except when your sleeping or gone-he should be in the crate at these times)

When you take him outside, talk softly to him and make sure he knows he's being good. Also take some treats with you. Once he goes to the bathroom, talk softly and happily, and give him some treats.

When he goes to the bathroom inside, use a harsher voice, tell him no, and smack his nose slightly. Then put him outside for a while. Do this ONLY when you catch him in the act. If you find a mess after two hours, you CANNOT scold him and expect him to know what you are scolding him for.

NEVER spray dog sour spray into his mouth to tell him "no". I see absolutely no way for the dog to associate bad taste with "I shouldn't go to the bathroom inside"

Use repitition when training. Do not watch him carefully one day, and then take a break the next day. A dog is considered potty trained when he can spend 12 weeks without having an accident inside. Until then, it is up to you to teach him.

Watch him at ALL times if you want to train him.

And, I'm writing this in a somewhat hurry, if you need me to explain any of it further than send me a message in my inbox.

Well its hard to teach a new dog, new tricks.. but anyway.. cage train him..thats where whenever you leave the house, put him in there..and whenever he does pee in the house put him the age for a couple hours..its really hard to do and watch your dog get punished..but if you want to keep your dog :-)..its works.. believe me..and eventually his cage will become his security..
