I recently was told by a doctor I have an eating disorder. I'm 5'7", and weight 105 lbs. She said I am still growing and should weigh about 125. I haven't had my period for like 7 months!! I told my doctor that too. But, the thing is, I didn't start losing weight until November. My mom's gonna take me to a nutritionist soon to tell me how I should be eating. But I'm scared I messed up my body & will never get my period back, or that I caused my breasts to never grow again. Could I have caused those 2 things? PLEASE be HONEST! Thanks
To have regular "pubertal" growth (including menstrual periods and development of secondary sex characteristics (ie hair, breasts), you need to have a certain percentage of body fat (often between 16-24%). It is often seen that people with low body fat have hormonal problems (athletes esp). The hormones that are responsible for development are steroid hormones which are produced from cholesterol, which as you know, is a fat.
So, your doctor is just concerned that you don't have enough fat and weight to have a normal pubertal/hormonal response to growing. It is important that you eat properly and a good blend of foods that give you all the nutrition that you need. When you get to a more appropriate weight and body fat content- your periods will come back and the development of your secondary sexual characteristics. If it continues though, it may be beneficial to go to the doctor and be put on an estrogen/progesterone supplement (ie oral contraceptives) to help give you a regular period.

At least you are getting help now. You will start feeling better soon if you work at it. Sometimes gaining weight is as hard as losing it. Don't be scared, just try to be smarter. BooBoo2007 answered Sunday March 13 2005, 6:58 pm: I'm 5 ft 7 and 105 pounds too, and I went to the doc bout it. I have high metabolism, and I am anemic. Which is when you don't have enough red blood cells in ur body due to diet deficiency, which is not gettin the right nutrients and vitamins in your body. I can't really help with the whole period and breasts, but with the health, I believe I can. Start drinkin alot of water, take prenatal vitamins, yes they're for pregnant women, but they do help. If not them, then vitaball, or children's vitamins. Also, you're diet...alot of fruits, and vegetables, granola bars are really good for you. healthy cereals in the morning, alot of milk every day. I'm in the same situation as you really, and this is what I wuz told by a Doc. Hope everything works out or you!
orphans answered Sunday March 13 2005, 5:39 pm: Yes, you *could* have caused those things. Eating disorders can seriously mess up your body, and not just your period and breasts. You will probably get your period back once you gain some weight, but depending on your age, your breasts may never grow.
However, do not fret too much about it. If you're still at the stage where your body is growing, you probably have a bit of development left in you. Your eating disorder may have permanently stunted your growth, but it is possible that your breasts will grow back.
In any case, why worry? There's a lot more to you than your breasts. You're a beautiful, valuable person, and if a guy won't date you because you're flat-chested, he's not worth your time.
By the way, if you're recovering from an eating disorder, you should see a psychologist as well as a nutritionist to help you overcome the issues that caused the disorder in the first place. Good luck! [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
all4u answered Sunday March 13 2005, 5:13 pm: 5'7 and 105 ... yes, you are definately below the healthy wieght for that height! I don't know exactly your situation, whether you were intentionally trying to lose weight, whether you are scared of gaining some weight back or whether it is a biological phenomenon. I'll give you an idea of what's "normal" for weight. I'm five foot four and wiegh 115 pounds and am considered on the bringe of being on the lower side of healthy ... the fact that you have not had your period for seven months is a definate sign of severe anorexia, and I truly advise that you see the nutritionist your mom wants to take you to and perhaps maybe talk to some one about fears of gaining weight back.
Anorexia is a disease in which you love and obsess about food, but are scared of the consequences of enjoying it. This is a dilemma and I understand you might be frustrated ... it's easy to say eat the right foods and excerise but I know it's a little more difficult than that. You first have to want to help yourself ... realize the lack of nutrients may be distorting some perceptions you have about weight. Lack of nutrients also makes it hard to focus on life, work and being happy. I have a question to ask you ... when are you most happy? Celebrities, whom people look to for fashion, lifestyle, and other choices (twins from Full House) ... they are not happy. You can not truly be happy if your obsessing about weight, or looks, or whatever it is your trying to achieve by cutting back on food. I bet your happiest when these sort of thoughts are not paramount and your laughing and giggling with friends or some fantastic comedy on television, or perhaps when your lost in reverie while watching the waves at the ocean. The point is, there is way much more to life than conforming your body to some standard that is not only physically unhealthy, but effects your well being as well. Find people who love you for you ... I think that's important. You'll feel more comfortable. I'm not sure the extent of your weight loss, but I also advise you to talk to some adult you trust, a counsellor, parent, friend ... whomever you most trust and really lay out your feelings... just pour it out. I gaurantee you this release, although hard (especially if you have a hard time asking for help, and I can vouch for you on this, sometimes I do ...) but you have to realize everyone on this planet relies on someone else at one point in their life to help them and in return I'm sure you'll help someone else out ... This is rather a random answer ... it's because I really do want you to see that your value is much more than your physical body!!!!! 10 million people can tell you the same thing, but when it comes down to it, it really has to come from within. So I really hope you see this within yourself
As to whether or not you have jeapordized your body ... you still have a chance! However if you continue to deprive your body of needed nutrients, I can no longer gaurantee that ... If your truly worried I hope you really hope you cherish youself eneough to get the help you need .. trust me, I understand how hard that is ...but it's for you, and your number 1!!!!
I truly would like to know how things go, if you don't mind posting an e-mail ... aly_boschee@yahoo.com .. the greatest of luck .. have a great day, enjoy the sun, rain whathaveyou .. and please if you need someone to talk to ... don't hesitate to e-mail ..

Lizzy answered Sunday March 13 2005, 4:59 pm: Don't worry about your breasts or period. Worry about getting healthy. A few months back (i'm 5'6) i weighed 90 pounds, and my period stopped and i had no boobs. Once you get to your correct weight, i promise you'll be okay. everything went completely normal for me and my figure is actually curvier than a lot of girls and i get my period every month, i have no doubt in my mind all will go well for you too.
Hope you get better
