How do I get people to respect me?

Question Posted Thursday March 10 2005, 7:47 pm

Well, I am a sports freak, but I have started to get out and try new things. I tried color/winter guard, but when my grandfather passed away, I got behind and couldnt catch because I couldnt get anyone to teach me the things that I had missed. So now I am the manager of the track team and I love it... except for one thing. When Im at practice the coach is late, I try and tell them what they should be doing and stuff until the coach gets there. Then one of the girls tried to tell me off and say that you cant have practice unless the coach was there and one of the guys was telling me that he had been there longer and that "we strech as a team", but the rest of the team except maybe two or three, including him, were running. If they strech as a team, shouldnt they run as a team? So, how do I get them to respect me and not be smart ellic to me when I tell something to do, both in a nice way and a mean way? I have talked to the coach about the two times they have disrespected me.

Tell them you're the manager and you can get their butt kicked off if they don't practice.

Hey. I'm the manager of my school's JV baseball team. They're pretty good about being dedicated to their sport and not goofing off a whole lot, but the coach told me that I DO have authority over them, and I can tell them to stop doing anything they shouldn't be doing and stuff like that. It should probably be the same for you. What you could do is just go up to the coach one day and politely be like, "If you're not at practice yet, do I need to tell them to start stretching and warming up or anything if they aren't already doing it?" And if the coach says yes, you might want to ask him/her to tell the team that you have the authority to tell them to get started.

I mean yeah you're the same age as them, but they still have to realize that you're their manager, and you're only trying to do your job right.

Don't be a control freak or anything, but just tell them you don't want them to get in trouble when the coach gets there, so they should start doing whatever their supposed to. ♥

Apparently it's not a team if they aren't respecting you. Being a team includes respecting your fellow team mates. If you have the power to, give them push-ups to do or something. I'd talk to the coach and ask him to tell the team to respect you, and also to tell the team to listen to what you tell them to do if the coach isn't there.

I would try not to let those jerks that are on the team get under your skin too much. Remember, there will ALWAYS in all situations be a moron, someone to hate.

ok if you want sum respect, your gonna have to get a little loud. you have to show your authority. if you dont they will see you as one ofthem and treat you like one of them. but if you use your athority, they will understand that your in command. but this can take sum time. so wat you wanna do is almost threatin, but not in a bad way!! i dont know wat age group the track people are in but usually like threating to kick them off the team if they dont show respect, because if you dont show respect you dont get respect. so if they tell you off tell them they cant practice, or threatin to kick them off the team. its all about authority, so use the power that you've been given. i hope i helped.

They should run as a team, BE a team and act like a team too. You can get them to respect you by teaching them new things, maybe talking with them about why they have to be so difficult when it is really simple to do what they are supposed to do.
