I'm 13 and I had high cholesteral since I was 3. My parents aren't exactly cooks and we always eat food made from instant and frozen foods. I'm skinny, but still I need to exersice, but I'm too lazy because the food I eat isn't giving me enough energy. Any suggestions on how to be healthier?
Basically, you want to eat more fruits, vegetables, and grains, and less meat and dairy. Dairy products tend to have less cholesterol than say, beef.
Sometimes little things can help. Check the different brands of bread next time you buy some. Get one with more fiber per slice. Instant oatmeal comes in lots of flavors, eating it for breakfast 3 times a week should help. For cereal, try things like cherrios and total, or other cereals that have high fiber content.
Exercise is good for everyone. You can start out by stretching. It doesn't take much energy, but still gets you into a routine. Then add leg lifts or push ups or something quick and easy. Then you can add jumping jacks, or jogging in place. Start simple and light, then add things as you feel ready.
Since you have had this problem since you were three, there is a chance that you will need medication. Don't forget to get check ups and to talk about progress with your doctor. Your doctor may be able to help you nudge your parents into buying healthier food for you. [ dreamingkat's advice column | Ask dreamingkat A Question ]

Although your parents don't cook, you can maybe start cooking. When you make homemade food, you know what goes into it and you can control the fat, salt, and sugar components. If that's not appealing, try suggesting your family to buy more health-conscious food. Since there is a low carb craze going on right now, there are a lot of pre-packaged food that are healthy. For the energy part, I don't think you can put blame on the food because carbs (which almost everything has) has carbs which give you energy. For a boost however, drink a lot of water, and get some much needed motivation to exercise. It doesn't have to be strenuous, start at maybe 15 minutes a day and gradually work yourself up to which you are comfortable. Good luck! [ mylinhthan's advice column | Ask mylinhthan A Question ]

Karen answered Sunday February 27 2005, 4:46 pm: Since you have a high cholesteral, you need to start eating foods with less fat and watch what you eat; eat foods with low cholesteral. My mom has high cholesteral also and she told me that if you eat Quaker Oatmeal, it will lower your cholesteral. Tell your parents that you need to start eating healthier and they need to buy healthier food. Once you have enough energy to exercise, start doing cardio exercises such as running, jogging, jump roping and other cardio activities such as taebo and kick boxing. Then just do other exercises. You should talk to a doctor about this and they will explain everything better to you and what you should eat and such.
