Prom Dress Alterations

Question Posted Tuesday February 22 2005, 10:04 am

I got a prom dress for my Senior Promt his year last year when they were on sale. My mom made me get it a size bigger tha I am thinking I would grow into it over the year but I haven't. So I was wondering how much do you think it would cost to get it taken in about a half a inch. thanx for any help

Is there someone you or your mom know that can sew and would be willing to do the alteration for you? Yes, going to a professional is an idea, but it would be a lot cheaper to do it yourself, as long as it's not too complicated of an alteration.

My mom had to alter my prom dress last year, too. It was about an inch or so too big in the boobes. She does sew, so she just took it in with her sewing machine.

If your mom doesn't sew, maybe there's a relative (aunt or grandma), someone at church, or a neighbor that does who'd be willing to do it for you.

If it's just hemming the bottom, that's pretty easy, unless it's one of those super poofy skirts, or it has a lot of layers. Taking in the bust or waist is a little more complicated. Another option if it's spaghetti-straps is to shorten the straps to make it fit better on top.

Hey trust me its not going to cost muuch to get your dress hemmed. If it has alot of beading and very fancy I would say it would be about 15-25 but that would probably be the most. Thats how much my sisters prom dress cost to be hemmed a little bit. But remeber all places are different I hope I helped xo0x

Every tailor is different and it depends on how they charge and so on. I don't know how much it would cost to get a half an inch off of your dress, since all tailors are different but you can just call one up and ask them yourself.

It dependes on the tailor, how the dress is made and the fabric. Plan on spending at the very least $20.
