exercies for dance

Question Posted Tuesday February 15 2005, 3:41 pm

Hey, I really want to get better at dance. Like, ballet? I can't get my leg high enough and my 5th position stinks. My teacher is getting on our case because most of us can only get to 3rd position. So does anyone know any exercises (tried and true) that me and my friends can do to get our legs higher and get our 5th position good? Oh and only if you know what I'm talking about or are/have been a dancer. Thanks so much!

hun, every dance faces these problem sometime in their life. exercises for turnout: laying on ur back with both feet in the air, practice turning out and in. when you are standing, and your teacher says more turnout, DO NOT FORCE YOU TURN OUT FROM YOUR KNEES! you turn out from the hips. if you turn out incorrectly, you can get knee problems which are very serious. ways to get your legs higher: well it takes time, but, just always strech whenever you have time, even when you watch tv maybe sit in a straddle or split. and every day in class just work super hard and eventually, they'll get there. exercises for split: theres not many exercises to get your spilts better, just everyt time u get the chance just go into a split and hold it, it will eventually happen! pirouettes: take a good preparation before the turn, have good posture, push off form 2 feet, spot, and just go for it. yes, its easier said than done, trust me! but my dance teacher always said, "you just gotta go for it!". well give these a try and hope i've helped!

okay i was a dancer for seven years...try sitting on the ground with one of your legs sticking straight out and the other one tucked under your butt..hold it for 20 seconds..and then switch legs..another exercise is to sit with your hands on the ground and your knees..and lift each leg up for 20 seconds straight out..another one is to lay with your stomach on the ground & lift your legs up without bringing your stomach up..if you feel the burn you know its working..sry if this is confusing..GOOD LUCK muah x3

Alright for your fifth posistion. Its a matter of your body getting used to the feel of it. Your kicks higher..work on leg excercises more to stregthen you muscles. Splits are flexability so thats also about your body getiing used to that posistion. About pirohettes, you have to squeeze all your muscles together and tighted your abs, having good abs will help a lot, tighten your center. And of course for all of these..PRACTICE

Hey.. i dance 4 days a week and have been for 11 years, and i know what you mean. Soo when you say you dont have a good 5 position, that means you need to work on your turn out. So, lay on your tummy on the floor flat out, arms to your sides. Then bend your knees (which is awkward) and make your toes touch. This sound hurt and feel uncomfortable at first, which means its working lol. So lay there and like read or watch tv or somthing because its working it. Now for your legs to get higher, you should work on your flexibility and your strength. Your flexibility is somthing that your work on for a while, and doesnt just come( like you know). So just do all your leg stretches-splits, lunges and what not on a daily bases or somthing like that. And your strength needs to buid in the top of your thigh to hold and throw your leg up. So what you do is stand with your legs hip level apart and do squats bending your legs (knees) for like 2 minutes or however you want. It burns after a while lol and you also know its working. Now for your piroettes practice just staying up in relevea because thats all it really is, except turning. Spot your head, don't bend your knee, try to think of going stright up, and just use your plea and relevea. Good luck, hope i helped =D

Getting your split just do lots of leg exercises. Like sit down and have your legs far apart..and just stretch from side to side..do that everyday. You'll see you will be able to get down into a split faster and stuff. To get your legs higher just go as high as you can (relavae) and hold. It might hurt but just do is it and when you have to, come down. Do that for a while everyday and I'm pretty sure you'll get higher. For your 5th position, well I dont know how you can get better at it. Just practice it all the time and maybe even have someone move your feet for you.

Hi,
I'm not a dancer but I do do karate and for that, we have to do some very high kicks. We have this one stretch that works really well and makes your legs really flexible, but it takes a while of doing it. Sorry if this is difficult to understand, I'll explain as clearly as I can -
Lie flat on the ground (on a comfy mat or carpet) with your legs and arms straight out on the ground too. Your legs should be together and your arms at your sides. Raise one of your legs to as high as you possibly can by yourself, and then get a friend to push it back a tiny bit, until it hurts - but not until it kills!! Stop when it starts hurting, and make sure you warm up first to avoid hurting yourself. Hold for ten seconds and then lower your leg down slowly. Repeat with the other leg. Do this every day, morning and night if you're really keen. I've only been doing it a couple of months and I can already kick way higher than before!! My friend, who's been doing it a bit longer, can now get her leg to almost touch her face!!
Hope that helped, and sorry I couldn't give any advice on the pirouettes! Maybe try staring at a certain spot every time you go round and focus on it every time you pass it?
Blessed Be,
Rach xxx
