well, my friend told me that before you use a tampon there is a piece of skin that the tampon wiil break! I am 14 and i haven't started my period yet! Does it hurt the first time you put a tampon in? Is there a piece of skin? Thanx 4 helpin!
Siren_Cytherea answered Saturday January 22 2005, 6:57 pm: The piece of skin your friend is referring to, I believe, is the hymen (which is the technical term for a girl's cherry). It's true that a tampon CAN break the hymen, but it might not. Your hymen can be broken by horseback riding, being fingered, having sex for the first time...But you'd know if it broke. It hurts. I doubt using a tampon will break it unless it goes in very far, or goes in the wrong way. If it hurts, try angling it differently. It may be a little uncomfortable to have a tampon in, but it shouldn't really hurt. Also, make sure you start with a slim tampon (I started with Playtex slimfits, those are really easy to get in. Now I use Tampax pearl.) I hope this helps!

NEVERLETG00 answered Saturday January 22 2005, 2:34 pm: idk, i learned there is a peice of skin, but its really thin and really esay to break.. so idk if there even is one, since you haven't started your period yet i dont think it broke? but like i said idk if there even is one, but the first time you use a tampon it shouldn't hurt, if it does try putting it in a different way. xox [ NEVERLETG00's advice column | Ask NEVERLETG00 A Question ]

alisonmarie answered Saturday January 22 2005, 1:24 pm: I think the piece of skin your friend is referring to is the hymen. A lot of people imagine it as this thick piece of skin which has to be 'popped', but that's actually a bit of a myth.
The hymen is actually fairly thin, and most girls don't have much left by the time they hit the teen years. Riding bikes, horses, etc can break the hymen. Even if it remains 'safe' from those activities, it starts to naturally disintegrate.
This doesn't mean that putting a tampon in won't be uncomfortable, though. To make it easier, read all the instructions. Look at diagrams on the internet. Take your time. Buy mini-tampons. If it doesn't work out, try again the next month.
Putting a tampon in for the first time can be tricky, but once you figure out the right angle you'll be able to do it blindfolded. Putting in a tampon SHOULD NOT actually hurt, so if it does stop what you're doing and try a different angle. [ alisonmarie's advice column | Ask alisonmarie A Question ]
Karen answered Saturday January 22 2005, 12:59 pm: No, a tampon won't rip it but it could happen if you insert it in wrong. In my opinion, it doesn't hurt if you put a tampon in for the first time. It won't be comfortable but you will get used to it. Yes, there is a piece of skin and it's called a hymen (cherry). It can be broken by riding a bike, sitting wrong, having sex for the first time, and doing anything physical. Hope I helped :)
