Christmas Bonus

Question Posted Tuesday December 21 2004, 2:27 pm

I have been working for a company for about a year and a half. Last Christmas time I got a bonus of $20. This year, when I was really depending on that small bit of bonus, I got nothing.

The company recently sent a letter to all of it's employee's scolding us on leaving early. I was one of the people who had left early sometimes. I haven't done it since, but could that affect my Christmas bonus?

I know it isn't that the company can't afford it.

What I'm wondering is what the proper thing for me to do would be. Would it be uncalled for if I asked them about a bonus? I need to call them before Friday about working on Christmas, so should I just ask about my pay on Christmas weekend, and if there will be a bonus at the same time?

Should I just ignore it and decide that they decided to not give me a bonus this year, or treat it as a mistake on their part and ask them about it.

I'm just not sure if I would be out of line in some way if I ask them about a bonus.

Additional info, added Tuesday December 21 2004, 10:20 pm:
Perhaps I should mention that I never see anyone from the company. The only way I ever talk to them is through the mail, or phone. I know that I don't have a bonus coming because it would have come with a check, and the next check is not until after New Years.

Lack of a bonus pisses me off because this company severely under appreciates me. I am one of their hardest workers, and I'm already underpaid. I was leaving early before because my work never gets praised and it's extremely disheartening. When I do good, they never say anything, so it does not do a whole lot of good for me to over exert myself just to make the head bosses richer. And, as people seem to say, it's only $20.00. But if you would re-read what I wrote, I was really depending on that $20 this year. I am having pretty bad money troubles and was hoping for the $20 to help pay for gas to be able to make it to work for another week.

Thanks for the help anyway, my answer seems to be to ignore the entire thing.

Well, instead of leaving early, maybe you could stay a few minutes extra. If you're the only person to do this, they will notice. Maybe they will talk to you about it. Also, somehow you could bring up last year and maybe slyly ask why you didn't get it this year. If you prove you work hard, they may give you that bonus. Hope I helped.

i agree with others. it's a gift, and it wouldn't be right to ask them about it. you still have a small chance of getting it, christmas is in 4 days

It's just a gift really, and it would be kind of rude if you asked about it. But wait a few more days, maybe you'll get it! And if you don't, don't worry about it, it's only $20. Good luck!
Hope I helped!

Just wait. Good things happen to good people, and you seem extremely well thought out. I'm certain you're on the Nice List this year!

Accounting practices have changed dramatically over the past year and a half. Taxes are taken out of gifts at 40% and all kinds of craziness. The company most probably decided that it was not cost effective to give everyone a bonus this year. Dispite what you think, no company wants to use its solvent cash for bonuses especially when the accounting to do so will cost more than the gifts. This is also the end of the fiscial year and they may want to bump their numbers. All kinds of things effect bonuses. My company gives gift certificates to their stores. Either way they get the money in goods or cash and it still shows them as generous. Ask another co-worker. There is nothing you can do about the situation anyway. Luck!

A bonus is a gift, and is not required, nor should you expect one. Asking for a bonus would be inappropriate, unless everyone got one but you. It's just $20 dollars, I wouldn't let it bother you too much. Besides, there are still a few days before christmas, you still may get that bonus.
