getting braces tightened

Question Posted Tuesday December 21 2004, 12:15 am

I just got braces a few weeks ago and I have to get them tightened for the first time on February 1.. I was just wondering.. When you get them tightened, does it hurt as much as it does when you first get your braces on? Do you have to like eat soup and stuff again for a few days after you get them tightened? Another question.. My ortho showed me this special way to floss, but it's such a hassle. It takes forever to floss, and it's really complicated. Do most people floss when they have braces? Or is it okay if I don't floss.. and just brush my teeth really well? Thanks.. I'll rate HiGh!

When you get them tightened, it doesn't hurt as much as when you first get them on, but it does make your mouth feel really sensitive, and you'll probably have a hard time eating hard food for the next couple days. That's how it was for me. And as far as flossing, I totally know what you mean. To be honest, I only flossed about once a week when I had braces because it was such a pain in the neck. I just used a good mouthwash every night, and I seemed to be fine. My orthodontist never mentioned anything about it, so I guess it was okay. I think you'd be fine doing the same thing. Good luck!

I used to just brush my teeth like crazy instead of floss but you really really really are supposed to floss! Yea it does hurt a lot but not as much when you first get them on.

It does hurt a bit more when you get them tightened...but it only hurts for about 2 days. To make you feel better it only hurts when you eat (at least in my experience). I suggest soup and mash potatoes...and apple sauce for a snack.
As for the flossing, it is a very big pain in the butt.

I had braces not to long ago and when i got them tightened it ajusted like in a few minutes so no you dont have to eat soup for the first few days after. And it didnt hurt, but of course everyones different. and with the flossing... i didnt floss much but it helps if u get this other tool that sort scrapes the dirt away... i dono what its called but you can get it at like walkmart and target...

Well I got my braces off a few years ago... so i'll try to help. When you get your braces tightened it does hurt for awhile. Depending on how much tighter they get will depend on how much they hurt. For instace, sometime when i got mine tightened it was no problem, and i went and had pizza right after... without any soreness or anything. Other times, i had to eat jello the rest of the day (i dont like soup, lol) but in the morning it was fine. Now this has never happened to me, but my brother (who doesnt take very good care of his braces) once got his tightened and claimed he couldnt eat for three weeks... i think he would have been fine with soup, but... So make sure you take good care of them, because it probably has a difference about the soreness of tightening. and about flossing. I have to admit that I never flossed with braces.. but i did brush VERY good.. and used ACT mouthwash... however i wouldnt suggest you do what i did... to maintain good teeth, you really do need to floss, but i know flossing with braces is really complicated... so only do it like twice a week... if you brush and use mouthwash really well... as well as stay away from all that food the orthodontist told you to... then you should be fine!!! hope i helped!! Anymore questions feel free to ask!
