Laundry Room Etiquette

Question Posted Monday December 20 2004, 1:38 pm

I live in an apartment building. I wanted to do laundry last night, but all 6 of the washers were being used. Two were no longer running so I decided to come back 20 minutes later.

When I did, the machines were still full of clothes. A little mad I decided I would come back in a while. When I came back, all the machines were off, but full of clothes, including the same two that had been off for almost an hour. And the dryers were open, so it is not like they couldn't use them. I got so fustrated, I just decided to not to do the laundry. This has happend before as well.

Is it acceptable to just remove other peoples clothes from the machines? And if so how long should I wait before removing them? I know it's kinda rude, but so is hogging the washing machine.

“Proper Laundry Room Etiquette” would be that if the persons did not come back to claim the laundry then you are well within your rights to take it out of the washer. Before you do that be sure to check by asking anyone in the room if it is there laundry. Assuming that the person has left, then you may take their laundry and set it on top of the washer (or folding table if there is one). It would be nice if you put a little note on it saying what washer it was in (assuming you put it on the folding table) but its not necessary. You can stay (if you want to watch your own laundry to make sure you don't leave your laundry in the washer for someone else to deal with) but you don't need to babysit someone else's laundry. This is what would happen at any privately run Laundromat so don't feel guilty about it. Good luck with your laundry troubles!

Try asking them first, if they're there, but if you can't get any answers, maybe you could remove the clothes and just put them back in as soon as you're done. And maybe try being nice about it, and fold their clothes. If they come up to you to thank you, try talking to them about it then. Good luck!
Hope I helped!

If anyone was there, ask them first, but otherwise, wait a little while, cause someone may have just went to get money or something. But if it's been that long, then go ahead, but if they dont come back, you can always put their clothes back when your done.

I kind of have the same problem but not really. I have a brother (a lazy 16 year old brother). He'll put his clothes in the washing machine and then in the dryer but then he wont take them out. I say "Michael, take your clothes out of the dryer" He says okay okay I will but he doesn't. So what I do is I take his clothes out of the dryer, put mine in, take mine out and then I just leave his on the floor to get dirty. It sounds mean but it's a reminder for him to take his damn clothes out of the dryer. You should take the clothes out and put them in the dryer and also leave a note saying "Please remember to take your clothes out." I hate it when everyone in my house forgets to take things out of either the washing machine or the dryer. I swear, I feel like Cinderella having to do everything. I don't want to be touching anyone's clothes. It creeps me out! You should leave them a note saying for them to remember to take their things out. Hope this helped.

I've had this problem before, and it is akward. I think it is acceptable to move somebody's clothes so you can do your own washing if they've left things for more than, say, half an hour, as long as you put them somewhere safe where their things aren't going to get dirty - neatly piled on top of the machines or in a washing basket is fine, whereas just dumped on the floor or strewn around is obviously not. A note tacked to the machine they were using saying what you've done might also be polite, especially if you've put their stuff into a dryer and it wouldn't be immediately obvious where their stuff had gone upon entering the room. A subtly-worded note saying that their stuff had been in their a while so you had to move it to do yours might also wake-them up to how selfish they are being in hogging the machines and might lead to less machine-hogging. If the problem persits, it's worth talking to the people in charge about putting up a notice (assuming their isn't one already) about leaving stuff in the washers or dryers for excessive periods to help combat the problem. Good luck!

I think you should just be patient who knows something could of happened to them so they had to leave. There are number of possiblities. Just think if something happened to you would you want other people to move your landury? Think of it the other way around.

Well, I would either ask the manager, or just throw the laundry into the dryer. You actually might be doing a good deed by putting the laundry in there! Another idea is to tell the owners of the clothes that the washing machine is done. Hope i helped :)!

Speak to your building manager. Posted rules for the laundry room should be placed in easy to read areas. That they do not have these policies is causing problems in the building and must be rectified. I would personally put the cloths in one of the empty dryers. In my college dorm we had a 30 min. rule enforced by the office workers. Even if you don't have someone to enforce your nieghbor's behavior it will help resolve any arguements that may come of washer hogging in the future. Good Luck!!
