At night when I'm in bed, my jaw always clinches. It gets so bad to wear it even starts hurting and I can't help doing it. I've tried putting my tongue in between my teeth but I just end up biting my tongue.
It also happens during the day. But I just make sure I always have gum with me because it keeps my jaw from clinching.
Does anyone know of anything I could try that would help? Or should I go to my dentist?

Besides getting a mouth guard, there's a few other things you can do to help out.
STOP CHEWING GUM first of all. That will fuck up your jaw very badly. The constant chewing motion is what could be screwing with your mouth.
Now, here's a good exercise to occupy yourself with instead of gum. Take your tounge, but instead of putting it between your teeth, put it on the roof of your mouth towards the back and push up with it. This will kind of keep the back of your jaw apart slightly so that your back teeth do not touch, grind or clench.
I had to take a heating pad and put it on my jaw for about 20 minutes a day twice a day. If you do that once in a while it will help to loosen up your jaw and stop it from being so clenched.

My boss had this problem, and because she didn't see about it, she had to have surgery. Her jaw had completely locked up. Please get seen. [ chaos's advice column | Ask chaos A Question ]

Jaw clenching is caused by stress, there are so many different types of stress. It is true but what you may not see is that there are many many types of stress and it could be anyone of them. But of course one way to try and lessen the situation is by unstressing your life some more by dealing with it in the day time with exercise, or calm mediating. There are many manywa ways to fight stress- one of them jaw clenching... not good.
What we must also realise is that everyon clenches their mouth to an extent, not all of us have major problems but we all clench it in small amounts so don't feel left out on a limb- we all do it.
The best thing for you to do at the moment is see your doctor and see what they say. In the meantime it would be good to wear a mouth guard. Just to protect your teeth, and for your earlier question yes among its many many uses mouth guards are used to stop grinding. But wait- it has multiple purposes. I know it will be uncomfortalbe as I have to wear one for waterpolo but trust me your teeth are one of your most important assets- look after them.
