redundancy

Question Posted Monday November 15 2004, 6:08 am

Can anyone help. I am currently working for a firm which due to expansion is doing a re-structure within the office. All of us have been told that they will try and get similar jobs for us to take but there might be redundancy. I have been offered a job which pays £10 less then i am on and have taken away the company car. I started with the compnay when there was 13 people and now there is over 200. Can they do this to me as i feel totally let down by the company.

first i saw this into two dimensions, one thing monatory and comfort loss second thing is it any revenge aganis me or we can call it as insecurity about future. if it is monatory loss definetiley we can earn again no need to worry. and if it is same condition for all the employees there isno matter to worry , of if it is only for you, may be you can evolve yourself to find what could be the reason for that. inthis way we can make our life better. second, our ego hurt, if you too much attached to what you are doing or position, when somebody takes it back you feel your privace is not there or your insecurity arises. pre conclusion canalso be one more factor for insecurity. because of deceided judgement. if it is this way, it canhappen for you anywhere intheworld. from the question, idon't thing lossing 10 dollar is not a problem. it is theproblem that your egohurt. i worked from this year but they did like this. it reflects some blameing upon them to what happened . you feel escaped if you blame them for thesituation. otherwise youhave to work for that to regain that. if youare self dependent person youwon't worry too much for the loss instead you make slight adjustment in your economy till it regain its old strenght. that is how even a country can do. but right now you don't want to loose anything . nor you not willing to touch you. somewhere you feel your the boss of the company. so you got hurt when they touched you. if you have valid reason to regain it you can explain them. or atleast you simply work quietly and peacefully till you got the acknowledgement from the management. i am not a person to suggest anyparticular solution but i can guide you for a better part of life. you can take yoga in your life. i have known many institutions but of all which the isha yoga run by a living master Sadhguru jaggi Vasudev the founder of ishafoundation, for total depth of yoga is a best one to keep the practices alive in day today life without any alteration in our present system. if you wish you can try that.or visit their website

I understand your posistion better than you may imagine. Here's some background. I entered the company where I work during a mass assistant defection, they found out they weren't being paid market wage. I stuck with the company through a bankruptcy, a re-structure and down-sizing, coming out of bankruptcy with yet another re-structure and down-sizing, a sale (to a company who swore to put money in and not change the way we do business) to the resignation of the CEO and his second, the President of Human Resources, two people that had kept our company whole through the hard times before and who were and still are much loved and missed by those of use who'd survived those times. Another re-structure and up-sizing, then a re-structure that planned to combine us with a sister company with most everyone but accounting losing their jobs in my office or being relocated or getting possitons in other areas with lower pay or only temporary assignments. I'd already signed my severance package and was two weeks away from my last day when... Call all that new re-structure to a halt, call back those who have already been sent to other jobs in other places, (Sorry about the new house, has your old one sold yet? I hope not you'll need to move back in.) We're for sale again, both us and the sister company. A hasty re-structure so both companies can be sold seperately or together, offer raises and incentives to beg severanced people back until the companies are sold and yet another re-structure can be devised. Seven years. All that in seven years. And yes they can do it. Lawyers and human resource have most likely gone over every aspect of the offers they have given yourself and your co-workers. It seems heartless with all you've put into the company, but the business world is an uncaring machine that needs more and more every year to continue. Sad as it is, your company is probably doing all it can to help you and your family make it through the changes required by any business, much less one that has grown as yours has over the years. My company has hired lots of outside counceling services and change resource companies to help us cope with the massive changes. I've always been a cynical person and I've been hardened by the constant turbulance of these past years, but I know the reasons they give for change are valid even though it hurts to my soul to see friends and co-workers come and go. Once 20 and thirty years was not uncommon for someone to be with my company. Now at seven years, I'm concidered an old hand a senior. If you need someone, I'll be happy to lend an ear. shannon216@earthlink.net

Companys can, and often do. In the US you could probably get away with sue-ing them (as stupid Americans are often sue-ing for pointless reasons) but I don't know if it's really worth it to do that... it is quite unfair and that's how the business world works, eh? Sorry , all I can say is you could pray about it... if you believe in God. Or you could search the classifieds or move to a different area with a stable, good-paying job that won't let you down. Good luck with whatever decision you make! :) *my mom's a paralegal by the way and I know how hard stuff like this can be*

I am sorry..it is i am sorry to say a way of life..a company gets bought and boom out goes the people. It could be that you will be not let go...if you can hiold out do..save every penny and keep interviewing...if you just started you may get a better offer. I would talk to HR and see how long you MIGHT have...but again...stockpile as much money as you can if you want to stay there as long as you can. you might want to contact a recruiter to ehlp in the job process.

O know this stinks..happens so everyone everywhere...

Yes they can. You can stick with it and hope things turn out better in the restructuring or you can start looking for something else. If it is really widespread, I would start working on my resume. They will probably give you a raise when they can. I might just be that they expanded too quickly. Weigh your options.
