Question Posted Thursday November 4 2004, 10:38 pm

for american history, my class had to write an essay. we had to be either john kerry or george bush and discuss what issues we are going to change. today we got our papers back. i got 19/18, but i had a see me on my paper. it said the teacher thought i had not written it because it was far better than anything id written this year. we had to get our information from 3 internet articles, so i gave the teacher my articles. i did not plaigerise, and i told the teacher that. i dont know if tomorrow she will say she believes me or not. i feel so insulted and ashamed even though ive done nothing wrong. what do i do?

Some teacher did that to me a few years ago. I still hate her for it. Just explain, in your nicest voice, that you are very sorry that your paper is intelligently written. Or cry because you are oh so offended, and make her feel guilty...

Plagiarism is simply the act of copying, word for word, someone else’s writings or to imply that an original idea or opinion in your essay came from you when, in fact, the idea or opinion came from another source. If you didn't do any of those two things, then feel confident in your writing style. If you did, and it was done without malice, then explain it to your teacher. She likely only wants to help you understand the concept of plagiarism. School is a place to learn, and sometimes this is accomplished by making mistakes. Sometimes, teachers make mistakes too.

if you know that you didn't cheat, then there is NOTHING to worry about....unless there is a sentence in your paper that is word for word exactly what is on the internet(or another one of your sources)...then she can't do anything about it!!! if you didnt plagerize, then dont worry about a THING!! i know you might feel offended...but once you prove her wrong, you should definately demand an apology!!

good luck sweety...

I'd have to agree with mostly everyone else, she can't hold cheating against you if you have the sources to show her, to prove that you said everything in your own words, even if some of the things you said were similar to what the sources say, she still can not hold that against you because you ARE able to use SOME information from the source in "'s and whatnot..if she keeps insisting that its not your work, then I'd definatly take it to the administraion and let them know what she is doing..because in my eyes thats not right..

I think your teacher just wanted to make sure you had sources avaliable. Most teachers that I know wouldn't have even marked your paper if it looked blatantly plagerized. They would have spoken with you immediately. Since you provided your teacher with the sources, she'll be able to see it was not plagerized. Our schools (high school and post secondary) have programs where you can type in a piece of your essay and find out if it's already out there. You can probably even do it with google.

If your teacher continues with the alegations of academic dishonesty, bring it up with the principle, with your essay and citations you used readily avaliable.

Be proud that your work has improved to a level that even your teacher is suprised at. Next time make sure you source everything, even the things you aren't sure of.

If you show her your articles, I don't know how she can continue accusing you of plagiarizing. If she does, you'll have to speak to the school administration about it.
