I have bitten my nails for as long as I can remember and now they are very short and small. I have tried absolutely every trick in the book to give up but I always give up and start biting again. I can't help it, I always set out with the willpower to give up but I'll get bored in a lesson and start to chew. My boyfriend and all my friends and family think it's disgusting and are always trying to get me to stop but I can't, what should I do?

PerkyPeacock answered Tuesday October 26 2004, 10:01 pm: chew gum instead when you're bored. see how many bubbles you can blow in a row, how loud the popping noise can be! or take up origami, or writing notes, or drawing, doodling, writing stories, biting your pencil (not good either, but better) dreaming about how beautiful your nails will look, writing computer HTML, anything! i bet you can do it!
best of luck [ PerkyPeacock's advice column | Ask PerkyPeacock A Question ]

beatlesrevil answered Tuesday October 26 2004, 7:56 pm: Haha, go to your orthodontist! Seriously, I used to bite my nails all the time and then I got braces! Or just like find a new, less noticable habit? Like..picking at your cuticles. Wow, that one's not that noticable and it keeps your hands busy. Haha, yea. So...braces or if you already have straight teeth, find a new habit to keep your hands busy. (Twirl your hair maybe? lol) :) -Manda [ beatlesrevil's advice column | Ask beatlesrevil A Question ]
dramaqueenbabeiwb answered Tuesday October 26 2004, 6:48 pm: Buy some nasty stuff at the drug store to make your slef stop. Also have something in your hand to keep yourself busy. (a pencil, a ball, etc) Maybe you could do something where you reward yourself. Maybe say, "If I stop biting for a week, I'll have a sleepover with my best buds. Keep making new goals and rewards for yourself! Good luck! [ dramaqueenbabeiwb's advice column | Ask dramaqueenbabeiwb A Question ]
~*Annie*~ answered Tuesday October 26 2004, 4:25 pm: Okay, this may sound silly, but when you are going to bed, wear oven mittens. This prevents you from biting your nails in your sleep or when you are in bed. Sounds weird, but it does work. Next, when you bite your nails, you are consuming into your body millions of bacteria that your nails collect under them. If you used a nail file to clean under your fingernail and held the file up to a microscope lens, you'd be disgusted at how many germs that you are letting into your body. Nail biting is a bad habit, and it is not very good for you.
I suggest you mix vinegar with water and add salt and the TINIEST pinch of baking soda (don't want an explosion!), then use a medicine dropper to drop that into your nail polish. Apply that nail polish, and it will be the nastiest thing you've ever tasted.
Also, reward yourself when you've accomplished something. You haven't bitten in a week? Treat yourself to a day at the movies. Things like that will eventually get you off the habit.

jbdreamer answered Tuesday October 26 2004, 1:05 pm: Get regular manicures, or if you can't afford it, have a friend paint them for you. Having nicely painted nails will help discourage you from taking a bite. [ jbdreamer's advice column | Ask jbdreamer A Question ]
MFS answered Tuesday October 26 2004, 11:18 am: You're lucky you haven't lost any nails to infection yet.
Have you tried putting really nasty tasting medicines on your nails? They make stuff that tastes horrible but is safe for this purpose. Usually it is used to get little kids to stop sucking their fingers, but it can work here as well. Might be worth looking into.
My other thought would be to chew more gum. Seriously. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
