Well, my question has 2 parts to it. The first part is, what causes hiccups (sp?)? And what is the best way to get rid of them? I get them ALL the time, like 2-3 times a day. They never go away. Help me out!
Additional info, added Thursday October 7 2004, 3:56 pm: Oh and I've tried the whole "drink water" and "hold your breath". Those don't work for me, so if you have any other ideas, just let me know. Anyway, when your diaphragm is kind of slow in the breathing process, it pushes up when it should go down, and it forces air out of you in an irregular sounding way. The "hic" noise is you diaphragm pushing up suddenly. 2-3 times a day is quite often, but when I get hiccups, I cure them by drinking something hot or eating a couple ice cubes or breathing in, and holding my breath for 45 seconds. Moop answered Thursday October 7 2004, 5:20 pm: hiccups (or hiccoughs) occur when the diaphragm (a fancy muscle above the stomach that hardly anyone uses, singers tend to have strong ones)flips itself upside down (don't worry, it doesn't actually damage itself). The hiccupping comes from the stomach trying to flip it back. There's not a whole lot you can do that will actually stop them, but some people find drinking liquids useful. aNgeLxfOrEvEr answered Thursday October 7 2004, 5:08 pm: Well when I have them, I hold my breath for like 20 seconds or as long as I can hold it. But if you hiccup while you are holding your breath, you gotta start over, or it won't work.
UrBabiiGurlAmber answered Thursday October 7 2004, 4:35 pm: hiccup-s is when u inhale to much air er sumthin....like when u laff alot...n u take a big breath..then u get hiccups
MaN_WiT_a_pLAn answered Thursday October 7 2004, 4:12 pm: No one really knows what they are...they can b caused by having too much food or drinking too much, also...If you get them alot and/or they last for more then a day you could have either appendicitis and diabetes...they have all been accosiated with hiccups, although they are rare...
a good way to get rid of them and this works really good is to take a glass of water, tilt your head so that u are upside down...hold ur nose and drink the water upside down....make sure that u are upside down...well just ur head or else it might not work...also take a mouth full of water not just a couple sips...swallow a couple mouth fulls...that always works for me. if this does or doesnt help im me n i could give you more pointers.... paradiei3abii3x answered Thursday October 7 2004, 4:11 pm: Hey..well, you normally get hic-ups from laughing a lot or something like that. And, the only way I know how to stop them is holding your breath..sorry! And yah, drinking water doesn't really work for me either. Well, good luck.
xokaylanicoleox answered Thursday October 7 2004, 3:58 pm: i think what causes them when you have too much oxygen or carbon dioxide or something like that in you and you hiccup and you can stop them by holding your breath or try yawning when you yawn they usually go away. im sorry you hiccup so much my hiccups only last like a minute or less lol and i hardly get them. i hope it gets better and i hope i helped! -kayla [ xokaylanicoleox's advice column | Ask xokaylanicoleox A Question ]
