Usually anyone who has been around cats all their life as had a little illness everyone probably thought was the flu. This is a one time thing like chicken pox, and if you've had it your baby will be immune through you and you can sleep in a boatload of kitties with no problem. I've forgoten the name of it, but your prenatal doc should know and can give you a simple blood test to ensure you have the antibodies to protect your baby. I'm not sure what effects the illness would have on the baby if you don't have the antibodies, but any possible threat is to be avoided. About the litter... great time to get out of that nasty chore. Happy baby! [ zapreth's advice column | Ask zapreth A Question ]

I'm 21-yrs-old and when my mom was pregnant with me,she was put on bed rest for a long time. Our old cat Smedley was RIGHT by her side the whole time! She always tells me how he seemed to be protecting her and she swears he knew something was going on because whatever side of her belly I was on,that's where he would lay.She tells me all the time about how she was afraid they'd have to get rid of him once I was born, but that he simply sniffed me and went on about his business!Haha! And until the day he died,he protected me with all he had!You should have no worries with your cat.Actually, they can be quite soothing, and nurturing. They know when something is going on with their owner!Congratulations on the baby!!I'm sure you'll have a happy, healthy, beautiful little baby!! :) [ ShOrTnSwEeT42094's advice column | Ask ShOrTnSwEeT42094 A Question ]

good luck with your pregnancy!
hope this helps.. [ ButterflyKisses52's advice column | Ask ButterflyKisses52 A Question ]

jbdreamer answered Friday September 24 2004, 1:26 pm: You and your cat are fine together. I think there would be a lot of homeless cats in the world if pregnat women couldn't be around them. My mother was pregnat twice while we had a cat, and it was never an issue.
Be sure to watch your cat around the baby after it's born. I have heard reports of cats sleeping next to the baby, and actually ended up suffocating them. [ jbdreamer's advice column | Ask jbdreamer A Question ]
MFS answered Friday September 24 2004, 12:06 pm: Yes, you can be around the cat.
The harm comes from Toxoplanmosis, which comes from the poop of an infected animal: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) which is why you should stay away from the litter box and all dust that comes from handling the used litter.
If you read, it is basically not an issue for indoor cats - but any cat that hunts outdoors is at risk.
Likewise, wash your hands after handling your cat.
The website I linked to says a bit more, and is much more reassuring and informative than my very brief synopsis.
