I never got like, an actual retainer, they just cemented this 'permanant' thing to the back of my teeth, and that was that. The top one broke a couple of years ago, though, and they said it was no big deal + just took the whole thing off. I think it just depends on *your* teeth. crystal200022us answered Tuesday August 3 2004, 3:27 am: Well, I'm sure that every doctor handles their patients differently but my orthodontist told me I have to wear my retainer for the rest of my life. He said that eventually once I get older I won't have to wear it as much but I have to wear it for the rest of my life. I hope this helps!
