I don't wanna sound cocky by this, but I wanna make the big time. And I know I have the voice for it too. My friends, family, everyone tells me that I have a fabulous voice and need to be revealed to the public. I've been doing everything musical for my school, community, and town. For example, talent shows, school plays/musicals, taking vocal lessons, in region chorus. But my question is, how can I, a fourteen-year-old from NJ, make it in the music bizz? please help me... i'll rate fast..thanks

I have friends in the entertainment buisness and I'm also trying to breakout myself. The best thing I think for you, since you're still very young, is just keep perfecting your singing and keep putting yourself out there. Many kids think that because they weren't child stars they can't make something out of themseleves but that's soo not true. Don't rush your career. Just keep putting yourself out there at whatever chance you get. If some owners of a store ask you to sing at their grand-opening, do it! If you get asked to sing the national anthem at a local baseball game, do it!! You should also ask your vocal coach about making a demo. I'm sure he or she will know some people to contact who can help produce it. A demo is basically a collection of songs on a CD that showcases your voice which you send out to different record companies and such. I could rant and rave for hours about how to get yourself out there but I won't. Instead I have an excellent site that many people have found useful. Go to www.vocalist.org.uk. They have a lot of amazing tips that really help!! I hope I helped and as I've said before GET YOURSELF OUT THERE!!! I can't stress how exposure is sooo important. I hope one day you'll get your big break and I'll keep my eye out for ya!

xoAmy answered Tuesday July 27 2004, 12:11 am: oo well it seems as though you're doing really well participating in so many events! just continue to do that... and just like volunteer for events that YOU'LL be the ONLY one singing so that you'll make the newspaper and everything... also try out for FAMOUS musicals and liek broadway... that will do you really well... and then go to new york whenever you have a chance and get gigs in as many places as you can! like i mean... big fancy places, shitty little bars... EVERYWHERE! you're bound to be discovered... but you need like a full month in manhatten! i hope i helped!:D best of luck to you! [ xoAmy's advice column | Ask xoAmy A Question ]
iwasherexox answered Monday July 26 2004, 11:55 pm: i`d say, as a musician myself, is to get a really top quality voice coach at a conservatory or college. depending on the type of music you wanna do, you can get connections from him. you try slapping together a band to play at charity events and everything. that`s how i`m starting out and i`ve already gotten a ton of requests after only 3 months .. it`s a good way to begin.
MFS answered Monday July 26 2004, 11:43 pm: Your best bet is to get noticed by a talent scout. I know many, many people with amazing voices. If you want to make it in the pop music industry, you have to realize that they don't really care what you sound like - they want a look, a style, an image. Modern pop music has naught to do with music - it is all about marketing and image - they want to sell millions of dollars of CDs fast, and milk the new star for all they are worth, then dump you like a rock when you are no longer the latest, "in thing". This is how the music industry has been fucntioning for a while now.
I hope, instead, that you can opt for the high road, and make it on Broadway or the like, where you'll likely get more respect from your peers than be a marketing suit's latest toy.
"thanks" for the rating... sorry you fail to see the points I tried to bring up, and sorry you also failed to see that I flat out tell you that the best bet is to get in contact with talent scouts, but I guess that's too obvious, isn't it? All because I suggest that pop is a dead-end doesn't mean my advice is crap and deserving of such a low rating. You need to learn that not everyone is going to agree with you all the time.
