surgery?

Question Posted Friday July 23 2004, 11:55 am

i'm thinking about asking my parents for a Lap-Band procedure. it's where they make like a .5 inch incision and stick a rubber band that can be inflated around the top part of your stomach so that your food slowly trickles down into the bottom part of your stomach, filling you up faster. it's a lot safer than gastric bypass because there's no cutting or re-routing involved. have any of you heard about it or even had it? please help me! i checked my BMI and it's 53.5! i almost cried!! thanks.

Additional info, added Saturday July 24 2004, 8:57 pm:
oh, and the reason why my BMI is so high is because i a 325 punds and i'm 5'5". it's mostly fat. maybe a little muscle, because i'm not that strong at all. my goal wight according to ediets and weight watchers should be in the 120 range. so it's more than just a few pounds.

also, the site for the center that i want to get this done at says that there are over 8 million americans that need to lose over 100 pounds, and over 95% will fail without some sort of weight loss surgery. check it out. www.wishcenter.org

hey, i know this is sooo late for answering, but my old advice page was g0inbananas420 and well someone has been going on there just giving rude answers, i cheaked up on the old page (g0inbananas420) and i saw what you wrote and the answer was " who cares lol" i am really sorry for that and i just thought i owed you an apoligy, i think you should first try to lose the weight yourself and if you cant lose anymore than talk to your parents! i am really sorry for before!

well alicia honey i wouldnt do this if your trying to lose weight. if you want to drop a few pounds then just exercise every now and then, drink lots of water, and eat less sugars and carbs. Also if your under 18..i think its a little to early for you to already be getting cosmetic surgery

BMI makes no difference to whether someone actually needs to lose weight. They can't be trusted. You may just be unusually strong, not fat, and muscle weighs more than fat. Talk to your parents/doctor about losing weight before you even consider something as drastic as surgery. My friend's mom and grandmother got the procedure you spoke of and it took them a really long time to get back on normal foods. I suggest you don't get it.

I'm not sure how old you are alicia and i have never really heard of that procedure, but you sound pretty smart so I'm guessing you have tried all the diets and have tried to excercise and it hasn't worked. I understand completely that it must be really difficult for you, so I think you should definitely approach your parents with this idea...good luck.

NOT SURGERY!! if u constantly think ur fat, then that can cause serious health problems. plz reply to this and tell me more about how ur feeling becauz ive had some experience on this kind of stuff.

I have never heard of that. I would never get any procedure to make me thin or help me get thin. I know a lot of people who have had gastric bypass and I think out of them all 1 I know is working but he just had it done in March the rest was a year or two ago and they are all overweight again. Diet and exercise that's what I would do. I have lost a lot weight just by doing that. Good luck :)
