College-Bound

Question Posted Monday March 22 2004, 8:24 am

I live in a suburb of New York City and I'm a Senior in High School. I'm trying to decide where to go to college. My top 3 choices are Cornell, Florida State, and Miami, and I've already gotten into all three. Miami gave me a lot of money, but Florida State has the best program for what I want to do and Cornell is the closest to home. I love all three campuses and don't care about travelling far away, but I don't want to make the wrong decision.
Any thoughts?

evaluate your choices...cornell is very pristegious...it would be really great for your career but if florida state has the best program then that may be better...also consider your parents paying for the college..if it's not difficult for them to pay for cornell then go for it- ..if it's gonna be a hassle..take miami bc it gave you the most money..it does seem like a very difficult choice- passing cornell up would be really difficult since it's suuch a great school...but go with your heart...you could always transfer if you find that the school isn't for you....it's even easier to get into a university as a transfer student than as a freshman...good luck ! hope i helped =] byee
love elle

If Florida State has the best program, you should go. Miami is a great school but they focus alot on medical for graduate school. Moving into a new city and state can be fun, as well. Visit each of them and see the atmosphere of the college.

Coming from Florida, I can say that I am sure either FSU or Miami will be great for you.

Go NOLES! Go CANES!

GO CANES! I am a junior at the University of Miami and it is amazing there. I, too, decided to go there because they gave me the most money. We are a private institution which makes us special and lots of requirements do not apply... so being partial i say.. GO TO MIAMI!!!!! BECOME A MIAMI HURRICANE!!!!!!!! BECAUSE ITS GREAT TO BE A MIAMI HURRICANE!

I think Miami bacause they are kinda paying for it but if you have money and you can afford it then i think that you should go to florida state because of the education. But it's mostly up to u because you're going to be spending about 3-4 years there. But if it was my choice I would go to Florida. Not only are you getting a good education but you can also scope out the guys. But if your a guy then you can scope out the chicks. Just do what you think is right cause when it comes to the end the only desicion is your. I mean it's okay to get advice but just stick to your heart and stay in school and don't drop out no matter how hard it gets. good luck makeing your choice and try to write back to tell me your decision. and again good luck!!!!!!!!!

always lil attitude

What is your major? Cornell is huge about architecture, and Miami I know has biology and also some good art as well. Don't focus on where it is. Is your biggest focus right now getting the best education or getting the most money? Remember also that nobody gives a damn where you got your Bachelor's. Save your money to get your Master's at a very good school, because that's what they look at.

alpha answered Monday March 22 2004, 9:37 am:
Congratulations on your college acceptances! That's a very impressive achievement.

There are a few questions that you need to ask yourself before you can make this decision. First of all, what are the relative strengths of these programs? Florida State may be the best, but is it so much better as to overrule all the other possible considerations?

Secondly, how sure are you that your prospective major is what you want to do for the rest of your life? To what extent do you want to keep your options open?

Thirdly, what other aspects of university life are important to you? Do you want a more intense academic experience, or a more laid-back atmosphere around you? Does climate make a huge difference?

Fourthly, how critical are financial considerations here?

So without knowing the answers to any of the above questions, my first reaction would probably be to go to Cornell. I mean, Cornell is world-class, whereas the other schools are ranked a lot lower overall. I can't imagine that Cornell doesn't have an excellent program in whatever it is you want to do, plus it will also provide you with the opportunities to explore other options at the highest level. And Cornell always looks great on a resume. (When you are applying to graduate schools, it's extremely important to specialize, and to attend the best program you can in your field or subfield, but it doesn't matter quite so much at the undergrad level.) Finally, I think if you go there and dislike it, it'll be a lot easier to transfer out to one of the Florida schools, and not so easy the other way around.

But that's just my opinion, and, like I said, I can't give you a good answer without knowing more about your situation. If possible -- I know this might not be practical -- I would strongly recommend that you go visit all three campuses, get a sense of what they're like, talk to some students and professors, and then listen to your instincts.

I would go to Cornell. I live in Florida, and this is a prejudiced answer, but I think northern schools are better. I think Cornell has a better reputation over-all anyway.
