Your body usually lets you know...Do you feel sicker than normal? I dont know how old you are but you must have already have lived enough to have a few bouts with the flu. Is it worse this time? ]
Usually if you have a cold or flu that persists for a long period of time, such as more then 2 weeks or so, you should see your doctor just to be safe. Also, if you have a very bad cough then you should also visit the doctor for medication so as to not damage your lungs.
Want to help the situation? Wash your hands and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and never touch a public door handle after having just coughed or sneezed into your hand. I carry waterless sanitizer in my pocket when I have a cold because I would prefer to keep my germs to myself. Be part of the solution, save your germs. ]
Let me start with I am not a doctor.
But... if you've got a nasty fever (like 102F or worse), or if you're coughing, vomiting, or otherwise excreting blood in a non-menstrual way, or if you're passing out or dehydrated (dark urine, extreme thirst, etc.) or if you can't take it anymore... see a doctor. If you've been resting and recuperating for a week or more and you're still laid out flat, you might consider a doctor too. If none of the above appplies, and you're thinking "nope, none of that, but damn, I need medical help because of x"... then see a doctor! ]
If you are too sick and need to see a doctor, it's not just the ordinary tummy ache or cough. You should wait a couple of days and see if it is happening constantly, if you just had a tummy ache for a day, you caught a bug or ate something bad. Also, if you are constantly regergitating, you might want to see a doctor.

Well, just see a doctor when you think you're sick. Lke when you cough a lot, sneeze a lot, losing voice, very lethargic, etc. Anything abnormal. ]
Well I think YOU should know when you're feeling sick enough to see a doctor, but sometimes when you feel that way you could just stay at home and rest. Your parents will know when they should take you to the doctor so dont worry!

I think it's a personal call. Sometimes what just seems like a hard to shake off winter cold is in fact an infection that needs anti-biotics to cure. In general, if you are feverish or don't show signs of recovery after several days, I would visit the doctor. Usually though you are the best judge of how ill you are and whether you need to see a doctor or not. ]
