Really annoying habits on the internet

Question Posted Thursday November 6 2003, 7:39 pm

I know this person who has really annoying habits on the internet. There are no periods, so it takes forever to try to understand her, and she uses numbers in the middle of words(c u l8er, g2g, etc) . It wouldn't really bother me too much except she goes on forever, and she can't spell. She also capitalizes random words and uses ... or ! after every other word. What can I do to tell her that is annoying me? She is one of my closest friends, but it is driving me crazy!

Tell her you cant understand her and ask her if she could say things more clearly. Or you could just tell her that chatspeak is really annoying.

One of my cousins does that. IT DRIVES ME CRAZY.
She will type like this:

Ya Wel mY friEnD bObbY thinks she ws HO't
(or) dOn' say dat.

My name is Jessica....and she used to call me "Jezz" online...IT WAS SO ANNOYING. Sometimes if I'm in a really hurry I shorten my words...and I always say g2g (for got to go) because it's just easier...but I'm not one of those people who do that NON-STOP...ERG! (I know how you feel.

JUst tell your friend the truth. I know it seems like it will hurt her feelings, but it's really not that big of a deal. Say...seriously, I can't understand you online. (and then just laugh about it so it lightens the mood)
If she STILL talks like that after you said that, then just tell her that you don't understand what she means (when she says something like that).

~Hope this helped~

She uses netspeek. I don't like too much of it either. Try just telling her to take more time on her sentences, that you aren't in a rush and appreciate punctuation.

ask her politely. duh. if she's a close friend, she'll be able to understand something as simple as to use proper punctuation and grammar. i mean, it's not a huge change. all she has to do is spell like she has to at skool.

I'm guilty of excessive ellipses... once in a while... it... makes... one... sound... like... James... T... Kirk...

Write back in English. With lots of uncomprehending "sorry?" and "come again?" notes where the 1337 SMS LiNgO gets 2 b 2 much. :)

Like all bad habits, it may just be one of those things that'll prove to you what a good friend you've been, putting up with it all this time. But you may be able to gently her out of it... or it may take over your brain if you correspond too much. Only time will tell...

i seem to lack tact in a lot of situations. i would tell her to just talk like a normal person. y'know, in english.
